I would appreciate some opinions and real world input on brand of axles.
Looking for 35 spline (for spool)
3000lb car
apprx hp 1000 with nitrous
Auto (th400/glide..not sure yet)
Will see some street use
Big tire car
Dana 60
Ford ends (large bearing)
Moser, Strange, MW, etc….
Bang for buck?... Down right dangerous…etc
And best source for axles ($$$)

By all means I'm not a expert here on axles or anything... Just here to learn also...
Any reason why 35's and not 33's?

we are dealers for moser and strange and will gladly sell you either. there are pros and cons to both. moser will have you a set of axles within a few days. strange it will take a couple of weeks. if you package it together (studs, bearings etc...) we can actually sell you strange a lil cheaper than moser. the strange look a lil nicer in my opinion. more of a finished look. so, i hope that helps.

Moser warranty's 35 spline and larger axles for 10 years and I have never had a set come back for warranty to date. Strange and Mark Williams are of the highest quality IMO. I run Moser 40 spline axles that are gun drilled and star flanged in our high 8 second radial car just because they weigh just as much as 33 spline axles. What brand of spool do you have? Sometimes different manufactures cut the splines on a different pressure angle.

Joe Wheeler twisted a set of 33's in his radial Mustang and went to 35's over the winter. It pretty much comes down to the diamter of the axleshaft. 35's are 1.5" od.

Ok, Mark Williams produces spools with different pressure angles and you can order from any maunfacture you choose. Call around and get some quotes, then call me...

I would say the issue of how much street use you're planning on doing would have some bearing on your choice not so much on brand but, on type of heat treat. I believe all Moser axles are induction heat-treated which means only the outer portion is hardened. Also, the Strange S/S and S/T line of axles are induction heat-treated too while the Hy-Tuff are fully heat treated. MW Masterline axles are induction heat-treated. Induction heat-treated axles are probably be more suited for street driving as they will flex and remain more ductile which would be more suitable to street driving with road irregularities and more corner turning especially with a spool. Read page 2 of the Strange catalog for more info on the different types of heat treat.

Yeah.. I did read all that about the heat treat on the axles. That’s the question…is it really a big deal to run a fully heat treated axle on the street (limited of course) Honestly, has anyone ever heard of one breaking from street driving. I've seen mosers break off at the flange during a run (there was a video a while back.. Nasty)… so I'd much rather have the better axle,….(strange)

Why not do it once and just get 40 spline gun drilled axles. They're stronger than 35's and just as light as a 33. Will 40's not fit in a Dana or something?? You're not talking much more $$ and you never ever have to upgrade them again regardless of the power you put down (well almost anyway). Don't know about strength between the 2 brands but I had Mosers in a few cars and just put Strange Pro Race axles in my car and they are far above the Mosers as far as a quality looking piece.

Mark Williams Hands down... Had strange axles before in another car but the MW Are much nicer. I have spoken with a few people from both company's Before I purchased for my New car.
Not one but 2 Strange Engineering Sales men said and I Qoute " The Pro Race Axles WILL NOT Hold up on the street and If You Mention The word street I will Not warranty them if they break."
Mark Williams Sales people Said Ya go right a head and run them on the street. I dare you to try and break them. IF You can break them Under Normal use and By that I mean Not breaking from a wreck Or jump the car dukes of hazzard style I will refund your money and buy You another set of axles From a competetor.
With that being said To this date I have not Physically seen or heard of a complete faliure on Mark williams axle...
In my Opinion and Experince MW has also been alot more helpfull when calling for Information
I have seen Both Strange and Moser fail at the Flange it self. This is were MW axles are alot beefier....
Good luck with your descion!!!

Yeah, Mark Williams also told me my Carbon Shaft from them was indestructible.
When it blew apart after 10 passes, they told me they would have never recommended the shaft for my application, and wouldn't stand behind it.
So, MW will tell you what you want to hear to sell you something, then back peddle when it fails.
I won't be supporting that company with my hard earned money ever again.

I have 35 spline m/w that are drilled, lightened, star flanged. The rear end is 6 years old and has seen 1.28 60ft's in a 2900lbs car.
I had Moser in my last rear end, 33 spline and that rear is over 10 years old and the splines are still straight. I drove that around in my mustang - 700+ miles a week with a stick

Ive used Moser and Strange for over 15 years and never had a problem with either and all were used on the street.

does gun drilling them weaken the axle any? seems it would

Only when street driven. The axles can take the twisting forces but not the constant beating from ruff road surfaces.

I had 35 spline Moser gun drilled in my 3400lb car for 4 years, hundreds of passes with ~1000hp. Many 1.2x 60 foots, many street miles and the splines looked like new when I took them out. I would have used them again if a local guy didnt screw them up shortening/respilining them - should have sent them to Moser to get resplined..
^^^ I heard about that shitty deal..

gun drilling dos'nt weaken the axle. the strength of the shaft is related to diameter.

I ran Strange S/T 35 spline axles in my 3180lb Chevy II for atleast 100 passes without issue. Most of those runs were 8.0 passes and had many 7.60-7.80 passes on them without issue.
I was happy enough with them, I put a set in my 3700lb twin turbo 55 chevy street car.

I have 33 spline Moser axles in my 3740lb big tire Chevelle that I drive around on the street. I only get low 1.3 60' times but I have had the axles for over 10 years without any problems.
