Anyone here have a flavor preference on Oil Filters? what do you run & where do you get them?
thanks

PS, Monty, you should have a "general tech" section.

On the dyno test for my motor we started out with a Wix filter for a few runs. Then we cut it open for inspection. Good to go. Then we installed the System-1 filter that I bought for the life of the engine........would you believe the oli pressure picked up two pounds pressure just from the change. System-1 all the way!!!! Will never use anything else........

Well might as well share this story here too. On an engine I dyno'd a month ago I was in a pinch for a filter, NAPA was closed, Autozone was open. Autozone has the HP series frams and I figured we would be good enough to break the engine in on the dyno.
We loaded, and warmed up the engine at night, and we were going to be all set to make pulls in the morning. I fired it up first thing in the morning to warm it up and had ZERO oil pressure. The engine ran for 25-30 minutes the night before.........
I didn't notice the oil pressure for a good 30-45 seconds..... being the excellent dyno operator I am :-D (knew I shouldn't have taken the controls).... yanked the filter and put a wix on and what do you know good oil pressure. Toasted the main bearings... had to do a quick switcharoo luckily it didn't hurt the crank as it's a good hard crank.....
I've been telling folks for years not to use a Fram as this has happened to me once before and now I'm my worst enemy. Screw me once your bad, screw me twice My bad!!!!

Right on guys thanks. I might look into that System one setup. I like the idea of a permanent filter. in the mean time, I will try to dig up some of those Wix filters.
thanks again.

Now for us guys with smaller pockets, I too have tried a Fram HP and it is pretty sorry in my book. We have used AC Filters on our Chevy Engines and have good results. Sytem One is nice, but the old AC Filter isn't too shabby.

i wont bore you with another fram story(i have one) i have lots of stories(lol) while i use k & n filters, i think the most important thing is to switch out/change oil filters a few minutes after start up-lint, etc, stuff you cant see gets in the filter material and slows down oil flow
when painting cars, i have used rags that were sup. to be lint free to wipe it down, and after shooting on a coat i see all the little hairy lint in there-so you can imagine whats in your engine @ start up

Yea another vote to stay away from anything fram has a name on. I was blessed because my fram issue happened on my own engine and not a customers....
I have been using K&N's with good results. I have them on big and small mopars and big and small chevys,,, no issues at all..

Another no-go for Fram. Among other items that fail with Fram, moisture will cause the media fibers to swell, and they don't shrink back. Byproduct of combustion is moisture......
Not suprising the oil pressure went up after swapping to System 1 from Wix. System 1 element isn't as fine.
System 1 is a decent product and is more than sufficient for a race car. I wouldn't use their remote adaptors though because they have a crummy flow path.
For street cars or anything that gets a few miles on it I really like Wix products. Baldwin filters are very good too but in some areas a little harder to find.

Rob just a comment for us lyon-tucky folks, that new autoparts store in town stocks all wix products. :-D

Welll you just made me cry.
I have fram on all of my cars :(
Even the Corvette I race.
Changing the oil this weekend.
Where can I get System 1 or Wix for it?

Napa & Auto Zone have Wix (if you have AutoZone out there), & the System one can be had @ Jegs & Summit (Next day, Gotta love it:))

I cannot find a lot of info on system 1.
I presume the filter has to get cleaned in a parts washer which I do not have so it would not be a good choice for me.
They just opened an autozone by me so I will take a trip out there and get a few of them.

I am a dummy when it comes to this but it appears the site does analysis but does not say what one should look for in a filter.
Is it the filtration number that I should use for my decision?

We have autozone, but it doesn't carry wix.

I had to bring this back to top because I got a question.
If someone change the oil filter to system 1 and "claimed" they pick up a lb or 2 or more...does this means the oil filter is restricted? :?
Oil pressure is created by bearing clearances and tolerances throughout the engine.
loose bearing clearances / tolerances = low oil pressure reading.
tight bearing clearances / tolerances = high oil pressure reading.
therefore if a oil filter is restricted does it means oil pressure is going to be higher?
enlighten me. 8)
If you see more oil pressure when the filter is changed, it means the NEW filter is less restrictive than the old one.
The flow path is pump to filter to galley passage to pressure gauge. Filter is upstream from the pressure port.
If the system was plumbed pump to pressure gauge to filter to galley passage then you would see increased pressure with the restrictive filter.

Stay away from the AMSOIL filters. Used one on my vehicle and it started making lower end noise in initial start up in the mornings. Went to WalMart and got a Super Tech filter and now it is quiet as can be. Anyone experience this yet. I heard it is a bad drain back valve in the filter.

Sometimes it depends on what kind of engine your talking about. Some engines require a filter with a check valve, others don't .

My motor was on the dyno and lost oil pressure, was using a Wix changed it out for a Fram had pressure for a few pulls then no pressure. Put on a no name brand and ran the rest of the session with no problems. I use a Systems 1 now, money well spent.
