I need to give you tips on how to hold a fish when getting your picture taken.
:)

1. Tuck in your shirt.
2. Dont hold the fish more than a foot away. Perspective looks wrong and people know the fish is smaller.
3. Hide your hand as much as possible.
4. Bend the elbow and hide the arm behind the fish.
5. Smile, you were fishing. You should be happy.

LOL actually I was smiling. Dont make me post the first picture I took. I did not have a camera with when I was fishing. Even if I did I couldn't take the picture of myself. That picture was auto taken off the bed of my truck when I got home :p

My hand is the same distance as the fish and my fist would fit in its mouth. :p

What fly did you use?

It was a minnow pattern with a weighted head. It was red on top on white on the bottom with silver in the middle. Sorry for the technical terms but I dont know the names of the flies yet.. :(

I would guess around 3 minutes? Honestly not sure. I only had a 5# tippet on so I was a little careful not to lose it. I also didn't have a net so I needed to wear it out before pulling it up. It came out of the water 3 times and each time I figured I lost it.. Was thinking I wont say a phuckin word if he comes off the hook.. :p It is the biggest largemouth I've caught... in a lake I figured 18" were the biggest and 12-14" were the norm... I had to drive a full block to get there.. :p

so you keep it to eat ?, I never kept a bass to eat is why I ask, most people say it is not very good, also you may want to send in a photo to Michigan DNR with all your info and you will be put on their "Master Angler's" online list, and even get a patch (whooHoo)LOL, 23 1/2" is the biggest largemouth so far this 2008 season, I'm on their list for smallmouth

Thanks Randy... I just checked the DNR site and it says minimum is 21" x 6#'s? Mine wasn't the minimum weight :( Also I was the only person on the lake. Its our neighborhood lake that is rarely fished and not too many people use it. So there is no one to sign for a witness. Not a big deal... I will keep that in mind and try to get someone to see it..

with "catch and release" you do not have to weigh them, just length which is 22" on a largemouth, step on its tail and pull its lips if its not long enough! LOL

FOR CATCH AND RELEASE ENTRIES:
(in addition to the required photographs)

1. It is not necessary to submit a weight for Catch and Release entries. However, for Catch and Release entries you must have the signature of one witness to verify length.

2. Do not keep the fish out of the water any longer than you can hold your breath underwater. Entries received without proper identification (photo and/or biologist’s signature will be returned).

3. Length measurements for Catch and Release fish should be made with a good grade metal tape measure, wood or metal yardstick. Measurements to be in inches to the nearest 1/8-inch (see Length Measurement Directions).

Handsome arm patches are awarded to all entries meeting established minimum weights, or, in the case of Catch and Release, minimum lengths. However, no more than one patch will be awarded to each angler per species per year. Master Angler Certificates suitable for framing are awarded to anglers who catch State Record fish or are one of the top 5 fish of each species in both the Catch and Keep and Catch and Release category. There are two categories of entry; Catch and Keep and Catch and Release.

Minimum Lengths apply to Catch and Release entries Only ***** Minimum Weights apply to Catch and Keep entries Only

I started filling out the form yesterday and noticed it said "no private lakes". I am kind of unclear on what that means. Our sub owns the lake but we have to abide by all DNR rules when I called them. They stated unless I owned the lake and all the property around it its controlled by DNR rules. The entrance is gates with a pass key to get in where the general public is not allowed to use it. So does that make it a private lake? Im thing so.. but the DNR stays their rules apply.

I'm thinking your right on the private lake part ( in waters of Michigan open to the public ), which would make sense if everyone doesn't have access to it than it would maybe take away some of the fairness for anyone to catch the home grown monsters!

What the DNR doesent know wont hurt them.

Bullshit fishing regs.

It's getting worse here in the PNW for fishing regs.

Nice lunker!!

I agree with you on that. I filled the form out and seen that along the bottom so I threw it out.. Oh well.. Hopefully I see another day on a different lake with one bigger. I should have wall mounted it.. :(

Good job on the light line. Best way to learn to fish bass or just about any fish is with light line. You can feel them "gum" the bait if it sinks, teaches you real quick,,you might loose quite a few but you get the all important "feel".

Top water fly is a rush, usually a explosion on the water, as I yank the bait right out of the mouth.

Yesterday I headed out with a rod and reel. I just tested different colors as the weather changed from overcast, to sunny to rain. The water clarity is around 8-9 feet with polarized glasses on. The water has a green tint. I mixed and matched fly techniques with the rod and reel.. No not casting so much. Just allowing the lure to sing to the bottom with slack in the line. When the right color was on I would almost always get a hit. I got into a ton of smallmouth in a few spots. Them suckers are aggressive for sure. One came off the hook when it came out of the water and by the time it landed another grabbed it. They are only around 10-14" in size but put up a good fight for their size. BTW is it common for you to catch a fish and his buddies swimming around him all the way to the boat?

Yup, they want a piece of the action too,,especially smallmouth,,little buggers are like pihranna. (around this area)

means they're hungry or they are getting chased when they charge up to the top like that,,stay there,,it's a pretty good bet on catching fish of some sort. after awhile they seem to get "bait lazy",,change patterns at that point.
