A guy at work has a 2004 Corvette that he had some work done on. He had some new heads, cam, lifters, exhaust, headers and the little stuff (air cleaner and over the counter stuff) done to his motor. He also had a new converter installed. The person who did the work said he would benefit from a new gear in the ass end. He now has a 2.7x highway gear that is stock. He was recommended a 3.4x gear to make the car work better. Is this a good gear to go with? Will he still be able to manage to drive it as a daily driver? Will the RPM's be reasonable on the highway? Also do you guys do this kind of work? I can send him your way if so.. If not can you recommend someone for the job?

He'd definitly benefit from the 3.42's and I'd actually even say to go ahead and get the 3.73's. I had 3.73's in my 4l60e (same 4th as the vette's auto I believe) and it was a breeze cruising at 100+ up to state to visit my wife at the time...maybe 3500 rpm's. I'll go run the numbers for you and post back.

When my car was stock it went 14.2's with 2.73's...all I did was switch to 3.73's and it picked up 5-7 tenths consistently...same converter same everything.

Definitly ditch the 2.73's though!

Okay here's his stats at 100/75 mph with the various gear ratios and 26" tires (stock height)...no converter slip cuz I'm assuming it's still lockup but if not it'll be off a few percent tops. I used 0.69 for 4th gear which is what it said when I looked up that tranny.

2.73 and 26"
100 mph at 2430 rpm.
75 mph at 1830 rpm.

3.42 and 26"
100 mph at 3050 rpm.
75 mph at 2290 rpm.

3.73's and 26" tires.
100 mph at 3330 rpm.
75 mph at 2500 rpm.

It'll definitely benefit from getting a higher ratio in there. 3.42 is a great combo for a street car on an A4. I loved 3.73's with the 6 speed, drivability was great.
