A friend of mine has a 2002 WS6 trans am/fierbird. The car has gone 12.25@111 with a 1.74 60 foot and we would like to get it down in the 11's. I might not know the entire list of parts but here goes. Stock internal motor. It does have a after market air filter box and SLP mass air. It's a stick shift car, with a dual disk clutch. SLP headers with loud mouth cat back system. 12 bolt rear with 4.10 gear. The rear suspension is sophin upper adjustable control arms with a sophin traction bar. Stock rear shocks with Hal/QA1 adjustable shocks in the front. Bogart wheels with M/T et street 27x10 tires. I think the car weighs around 3600 lbs with driver. Do we now have to get into the motor or is there any other options.

If that's the best 60 you can pull, then you're probably going to need more power somehow...throw a nice-sized cam in that bad boy and call it a day...people have gone 10's on cam/bolt-on ls1's with stock heads even at full weight.

Or try to get it in the low 1.60's and you'd be in the 11's where you're at now...

Or ignore all that and put a 100-150 shot to it and go bottom 11's.

What cam would you use in this case with a stock head.

Bruce, we've stuck some pretty incredible sized cam shafts into a cam only car. It's actually pretty crazy how much the Gen III/IV engine loves large camshafts. The question is where do he wants the drivability in relation to the cam? Is it something that you want to rattle his neighbors teeth out or just enough to get into the high 10's? With a stick, all the other drivability concerns are managed by the clutch so you won't need to restall it or anything. A good aftermarket driveshaft is going to be a must though.

Cam swaps are usually quite easy and we would really recommend replacing the factory valve springs. There are several direct fit aftermarket springs that can do the job. Factory roller lifters work well, no need to change those. But an upgrade to the oil pump would be a good thing to do while you are in there. The cam can be swapped without pulling the heads or engine out of the car. Probably one of the most trick things they did with the Gen III/IV motor with respect to swapping a cam with the lifters still in the motor!

Anyway, if you have any other questions feel free to let me know and we'll do what we can to help out.
