My old nitrous setup was a solid roller motor... I'm in the process of having a new short-block built, and I'm really leaning towards a hydraulic roller cam. I hate having to check the valve lash after every run, and I also hate the ticking of a solid cam...

The new short block is a Dart little m'd 400 with Scat 4340 crank, and Scat 4340 H-Beam rods... We're using Bill Miller Pistons. The turbo will be a PT91.5 f trim .96 A/R, and I'll be running AFR 227 23 degree heads... I really want to run a hydraulic roller cam just to get away from the woes of a solid... What will be the downfalls of going hydraulic??? I know not being able to rap it out as high, but what else????

Thanks.

The advent of the Morrel hyd roller lifter has cured some of this. It does help hyd roller out. But it is still hydraulic. With a BBC and heavy vale train components, 7k would be IT in my eyes with a very good spring and a titanium retainer.

But stop the press!

Have you considered a *tight lash* solid roller? I have hundreds of lobes I have designed that started out as a hyd roller. I took those lobes and made them aggressive enough that a hyd roller lifter just won't work. Yet, as you compare it to a SR, it is very non aggressive. The lash HOT only needs to be .006" to .012" HOT. They are very quiet and because they are not that aggressive, adjustment might happen every twice per summer. Spring pressure is still SR but the longevity is GREATLY increased.

Only thing is *IF* you street drive it, make SURE you have a lifter that is designed for street use. I am an ISKY Red Zone fan. The Comp "Enduro" series and the Crower forced oil lifters are good as well.

I hope this helps!

Good Luck!

So what kinda spec's do you recommend for a camshaft??? I've never considered the tight lash cam, but it sounds like a good idea... I'm sure you need more info about my car, so lets see if I can sum it up here.

76 Camaro, weight with driver roughly 3800 lbs (I am heavy.)
400 sbc
Dart Little M Block
Scat 4340 Crank
Scat 4340 H-Beam Rods
Bill Miller Pistons with Hellfire rings
AFR 227 comp CNC 23 degree heads
PT91.5 Ftrim .96 A/R turbo
Blow-Thru CSU 850 Carb
TH400 w/ brake, converter in the works
Ford 9" rear 28" tire, 3.50 gear

Just ask if you need more info...

Thanks Jay... :)

You need a REALLy good cam core to accomodate this. The cam will not need to be all that big at .050 but its gonna take some lift. Use a good lifter like an Isky Red Zone.
