How many chassis guys out there are certified welders? Are there any rules NHRA/SFI regarding the welding to be done by a certified welder?

How many chassis guys out there are certified welders? Are there any rules NHRA/SFI regarding the welding to be done by a certified welder?I would have to guess none.If they had to be it would probably put half the "chassis guy's" out there out of business.I am not being a prick its just that there is guys out there that think since they can stick two pieces of metal together than they can start building chassis.I am not talking about do it yourselfers.I would love for them to implement some kind of cert. program for chassis welders. You know as well as I do it takes more time to lay a good bead down rather than "burn it in,as long as it is welded its fine."It is upto the guy that certs the chassis to look over your welds to make sure they are penatrated and not under cut.I have only heard one cert. guy comment on HAZ (heat affected zone) and weld bead size.Heat is your best and worst friend especially when welding c/m.Too much can cause the area around the weld to become brittle ,not enough and you won't have enough penatration. The weld bead only has to be as wide as its thinnest member.Try www.aws.org or call AWS at (800) 443-WELD, ext 448 if you are interested in certification.

Most welders get certified because of job requirements. My previous employer required all welders pass a 6G - 45deg weld test utilizing a mig root and fluxcore cover just to get a job there as they built ASME certified compressed air dryer systems. I got my 6G mig, tig, stick and fluxcore certs while working there and also my 1G subarc cert. You would have been shocked to see how many welders with years of experience came thru there trying to get a job and failed the first test. I became a better welder just from working there. One guys passed it so quickly he had most of us sitting with jaws dropped but he didn't take the job because the pay was less than he would accept for starters. I agree with Gilsbach, too many guys are going out and buying a Tig machine and starting shop with no experience and that's dangerous in my opinion. I feel the NHRA should have a program in which the certification guys learn the basics of welding so they know what to look for in a quality weld before they throw a sticker on a cage/chassis. I've seen some cages get certified that you could knock tubes apart with a hammer because of poor welds. Even after 20 years of welding, i'm still learning. :D

Maybe you can post some pics of your welds, set the benchmark for others without the experience and certifications to strive for?

over the years of me racing i've only seen a couple people that i would trust with anything fast .gilsbach, mike pustelny , the late grebech ,and mandell are about it. i seem to find that billy and pastony is the only ones that seem to think what if this car gets into something serious and go the extra mile to ensure saftey and if i ever built anything to go 8.50 or faster they would get the job hands down.

Hey thanks wizz.I edited your spelling of Mike Pustelny's name (hope you don't mind). He and I talked for quite some time a couple of weeks back about saftey. The way I see it if someone was to get hurt because I was to lazy fit a bar correctly,I could never forgive myself.
