Women are different than men. As much as I appreciate looking at them, fantasizing about them, touching them (when permitted) and flirting with them, I don’t understand them at all.

I have no idea what is going on inside their heads. For instance, the other day I was browsing through some magazines at my local newsstand. I always start out by looking at car magazines, starting with the Ford magazines and then to the other drag race magazines. I even check out the new Import Racing magazines that are springing up. I don’t care much for the Rice Rocket stuff but these magazines always seem to have photos or scantily clad women posing spread eagled on the hood of a Honda or next to a Toyota. I like that.

After checking out the automotive mags I look over the “men’s” magazines. A mans magazine can best be described as a magazine with lots of pictures of great looking women, and typically with a bombshell on the cover in a bikini, to prick my interest.

And as many magazines on the stands as there are for men, there are an equal number that are clearly aimed at women. Curiously enough, the women’s magazines do not have a photo of a guy on the cover, just other women.

I don’t understand this at all but since I don’t understand women anyway, I’m sure that there is something to be learned here. So, I keep trying to learn.

Along with a photo of some woman on the cover is a hint at the stories that are inside the magazine. Again, in the interest of having a better understanding of the fairer sex, I have jotted down a few of these teasers.

“Show your hair who’s boss”

“Bye, bye, hormone therapy”

“What would you give up to be thin? (you told us and we were shocked)”

“Kelly Ripa, her behind the scenes bond with Regis”

“Makeup that really stays on all day”

“Got guilt? Don’t lose it, use it”

These are just a small sampling of the articles. I figure that the magazine editors put this type of information on the cover because they know what is of interest to women. Undoubtedly, these articles are designed to entice the ladies into purchasing the magazines. Certainly no man that I know of is interested in any of these articles, at least I don’t think so. Well, OK, I did check out the one about Guilt, but only a quick glance.

Like I said before, women are different than men, and to some extent, I can understand why. Life, and the constant comparisons between men and women and even the constant competition in the work place can take their toll.

I am finding out that it is not easy to be a woman today in this competitive world. Not too long ago, a well respected professional golfer (a lady who shall go unnamed), entered the PGA event in Ft. Worth, Texas. After much hoopla and flag waiving by the feminists (“you go girl”), the lady golfer qualified 96th and didn’t make the cut. And then, a couple of year ago at the Indy 500, the only lady driver to make the field hit the wall and finished 31st (out of 33 cars).

Tough times for women for sure, and because of that, it is going to be up to us men to make things a little easier on the ladies. This is definitely not the time to throw out any of the “time to stay in the kitchen” jokes. This is a time for sensitivity. You would do well to emulate me in this regard.
