For lack of a better description, this is my problem.

Using PPG Base Coat, I have painted the first color, then taped it off for stripes. Then I shot the main color, removed the tape off of the original color and there are the tape tracks. It looks as if the glue off of the tape "Melted" into the stripe color.

Is this going to show through after I clear the car or do I need to reshoot the stripe color?

What did I do wrong?

WyattDid you use fineline or masking tape?

Blue fine line along the edges, 3M along the centers.

I put the tape 3 layers think and did'nt have any bleedthrough problems.

Both tapes left marks, was about 2 hours after I shot the stripe color before I taped it. Thinking I needed to maybe wait longer.

that is if they aren't too bad, best solution is to use a clear basecoat like dbu or dbc 500 over the basecoat

Take some Isoprophyl alcohol and wipe the residue off. I used wax and grease remover, but if you are not careful it wipes the base with it

Shot inner-clear over the base, let it dry for 2 days. Then lightly blocked the high spots down. Shot the clear and it is barely seeable, and should block out when I colorsand and buff it.

In the future, I will use vinal tape for directly on base colors.

Thanks

your best bet is to lay down a inter coat clear, this way if the tape leaves marks, they are in the clear sealant, rather than the base color, depending on the basecoat color (silvers and golds) is a yes, vs. (dark colors blacks and blues)is a no, is going to determine if you can see those marks. hope this helps...
