I have a 2004 4.6 Ford Explorer and am wondering if anyone has ever towed with them? I always here people saying they are not good tow vehicles. Just wondering if anyone has any experience? I am looking to tow around 5000 lbs.

Don't do it, if you can borrow or rent an f150,ck1500,or dodge, do that. The Exploder has a narrow wheel base. That is unsafe combo for your racecar. Of course this is JMHO.

I have read a ton on the net about towing with a Explorer. From what I gathered it seems about 50/50 ratio about towing with a Explorer. I remember back in about 1999- 2001 or around there they had issues with the tire manufacturers namely FIRESTONE. It has the power and tourqe but wouldn't having a load help stability and actually lengthen the wheel base? I'm a little confused. Thanks

Forget all about internet hearsays.
Take it from real people who actually have expereinces with towing.
Explorer and other mini SUV are ok for light duty towing such as bikes, small boats, etc...etc..etc
I would never use Explorer or other mini SUV for heavy towing due to smaller brakes, short wheel base, narrow frame and weaker contructions.

I used an mazda navjo 5 speed same as ford explorer to pull drag bikes. The trailer was 10 X 12 enclosed it worked good for that after finding out that I could not use 5th gear because it would heat up clutch and I had to drive for Maryland to Va with no clutch. Then tried 14ft (3) bikes (1) 4 wheeler HELL ! ROLLING DEATH TRAP that thing was all over road. Added sway bars no help, switched bikes around no help. The fix was a 05 F150 long bed. Had big truck to pull 42ft for cars at time just burned to much gas. Just get right Truck for job and be safe and that was with bikes. and I also have had class A CDL for years it not a good feeling when that thing is feeling like its going to flip the truck over. My 2 cents.

your trans will hate you and your brakes are seriously inadequate, on top of what already has been said.

I towed my race car 2900lbs on an open trailer with an 4 wheel drive ranger 3.0 V6. It did just fine and was nice a stable. I had the trailer breaks working and it stoped fine. But I believe the wheel base on the ranger is a little longer.
