I have been running the same number (9009) since 2001 and now I have to pay for it. Seems like membership should include holding my number?

HEY JOHN IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE THAT WE NOW HAVE TO PAY FOR THE NUMBERS OVER AND ABOVE THE MEMBERSHIP BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE WHOLE PROCESS WHY ELSE WOULD A GROUP OF PEOPLE LIKE PROMEDIA THAT IS STATIONED IN CALIF. COME TO THE MID WEST AND PROMOTE THEIR STYLE OF RACING??? IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY AND IT'S GOING TO GET WORSE BECAUSE MOST OF THE RACERS HAVE ALREADY SPENT THE MONEY BUT NOW CAN'T AFFORD TO TRAVEL TO THE RACES .HOPE THE WINTER HAS BEEN GOOD TO YOU IN INDY. Geez..
What a Crock of Shit..(do ya pay to keep your number..or pay to get new numbers every year!)
sounds like the government..just constantly lookin' for ways to tax you!
maybe next they'll start charging us based on ET or car color, towards the
entry fee..

So you're saying the number I've had for 6 years is no longer my number, and I have to get a new one before the first race I attend? Glad I didn't get any stickers made.

I'm not sure exactly what prompted us to do this, but I'll find out and post here. That said let's get realistic here for a moment. Do you really think we are trying to get rich $10 at a time??? I'd have to get with the event guys but I would imagine we issue MAYBE 500 perm #s a year. That's a grand total of ....$5000. I think our monthly rent costs more than that.
Like I said, I'll try and shed some light on this as soon as I can get an answer.

BTW: You don't pay to get a new # every year! You only pay $10 (once!) to keep it for 5 years. You can opt to not keep the same # and not pay at all (except normal items i.e. membership, entry fee).

Can I pay 10 bucks and get my #1 back for 5 years?? :)

I don't think your going to make much money on this at all. I can call and reserve my number for free each year. I just would like to think if your a member of an organization, you are valued. This policy just doesn't set well with me, maybe there is a great reason?!
Kristen was very nice over the phone and I reserved my number again for this year, be sure to call before they give your number away. I would hate to have a newby running your numbers in shoe polish as you scrape your vinyl numbers off your car that you have run for years.
John - Only if Sparrow can see it in his visions
Rob - Hope to see you at a some of the midwest races.

NHRA and IHRA charge for the comp #'s too...annoying, yes, but there it is.

So if you don't want to pay to keep your number just call once a year and reserve it??.........doesn't sound like that big of a deal.
But, I also agree that with an organization that you
1. PAY to belong to
2. PAY to race in
3. PAY (if anyone can afford the fuel:mad:) to travel to
4. PAY for permenant number decals (which I thought were required in rules)
5. That exists due to all of the above^
Should not make you PAY for numbers.
Just my 2 cents

Costs a lot more than 10 bucks to keep that number!!

OK, the short answer is:
In some of the classes we were running out of "permanent numbers" and a good chunk of the numbers were taken by either: someone not racing with us anymore, someone that moved to a different class, etc. Our dilemma was if someone came up and wanted a # and it was taken by someone we hadn't seen in a year (or more) we had to say "no". This on top of the fact that in some classes we were running out of numbers.
This method gives us "inventory" of numbers we can manage and distribute.

1. Not everyone that is a member races. EVERY sanctioning body that I am familiar with requires membership.
2. See answer to 1
3. Obviously fuel costs are not something we control.
4. So are cars, engines, safety equipment, etc. and we don't supply those.
5.?
Again, You are not required to pay for your number. You can call every year and reserve it for FREE, or pay $10 to keep it for 5 years.

Thanks, for an answer. I think cross referencing active memberships and competition numbers would weed out alot of unused numbers and save your clerical staff alot of phone calls. Creating another database with data you already have...................well anyway you get the point.

It's worth a shot. There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are stupid people asking questions. :)

BUT, everyone that races IS a member
5. Referred to you not having a job if it weren't for the RACERS.

The problem is who is "active" and who isn't? I personally know a bunch racers that, for whatever reason, needed to take a year or two off. When they came back they still wanted their old number.

If they filled out one of those green things (tech sheet) last year their active. If they haven't filled one out since 2006 (insert a date here) their not, that information is on file right?
More than one way to skin a cat, I understand.
I think the way it has been done has raised questions, created confusion, and looks like a nickel and dime tactic. The information above could have been used to weed out the numbers, then post it on the board, if there were objections for a few numbers, then those could be handled on the phone case by case. Now, every competition number will be handled on the phone.
