I painted my new cage this weekend with Dupont Chroma base and Nason clear. What a huge pain in the ass job. Got in kind of a hurry and missed hitting one or two areas with clear. Didn't have enough light. Can I just shoot more clear over these areas now? Specifically, if I'm shooting more clear over clear thats a few days old will it bond fine? do I need to scuff it? Does the first coat need a certain amount of cure time first?
Thanks,
Craig

with the chroma base and chroma clear i have taken down a bad area resanded the base re based and cleared the area the next day after painting.
to sand you will want to wait at least untill it doesn,t gum up the paper depends how much hardener/activator you used.
polished a week later and couldn,t tell it had been touched also just about a couple of months ago at the booth a guy did a crappy job spraying the clear orange peeled the hell out of it i baked it and had him take it back down with 1200 and wet sanding as soon as it cooled put it back in the booth and recleared it about 3 hours later
hope this helps.

Clear won't cure below 60 degrees. All of dupont/nason's cure times are based on 70 degrees. For every 6 degree drop, you double the cure time. And vice versa. That said, I'd scuff your areas with 1200 and reshoot.

Thanks, thats good info. I shot this on Sat. when the temp was about 73* and 35% humidity, it was ideal conditions for 'garage' painting. Its much colder out now like 35* (typ. MO weather) and with the heaters running in the shop its still only mid-60's and 55-60% humidity. May wait a few days to re-shoot it, hopefully it'll warm up some again for the weekend.

Another question....is there a max. amount of time you can let a base coat sit before clear coating? IE: can I base coat parts one day and come back and clear coat them 3-4 or more days later?

No, Most basecoats have a 24 hour reclear window at best. After that, you have to scuff and shoot another coat of base and then clear. Clears adhere through both a chemical bond and a physical bond. Topping the base with clear inside it's window ensures a chemical bond.

this is only my opinion i wouldnt re clear over 1200 grit to me 800grit it seems there might be some longterm adhesion problems but again this is only my opinion i do not want to step on anyones toes here

If he waits then yes I'd drop back to 800 or even 600. If it had been recleared within a couple of days, 1200 works fine.
