I can't seem to get a straight answer on this. I've got a 540 BBC with a F2 Procharger. It's in the mock up stage and hasn't been cranked yet. I'm trying to decide if I need a vacumm pump or not. Some folks say yes I need one and some say no. The ones that say yes, can't tell me if I need a 3 vane or 4 vane pump.

Currently the pullies are set up to make roughly 20-25 lbs of boost. I'm also running Accel DFI, no intercooler but will have alky injection.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I use a 3 vane pump.

Rob,If you have a low tension oil ring in the motor you should use one.If its a standard tension oil ring it wont do as much .it will generally make more power but at a certain point will be hard on the oil pump.I have seen as much as 25 horsepower but not ususally that high.cheap way is to buy a ford pump from a 460 ford truck from a local auto parts pull the nipples out that the rrubber hose connects to and press in some threaded bungs in the holes and thread in AN fittings these pumps are not as good as a moroso but will pull 8-10 inches with a good sealed up motor.I use to have 2 of these pumps and swap them.take it back to the auto parts and tell them it quit working most have lifetime warranty. the pumps are between $45-$65 .

rob, because of the boost you dont want to have pressure get by the rings and pressurize the crankcase it would be a saftey factor to use a vacuum pump and keep it around 10inches.but generally as boost goes up the vacuum will go down.with a wet sump oiling you have to be careful to pull the vacuum you need a 3 vane is what you want.

I bought one of the GPZ pumps which is a ford pump, found it inadequate on my 528 cube alky injected motor, went to a Moroso 3 vane, spin it 80 percent and can still only get 7 inchs of vacuum. So from that experiance i would say go with a new advanced or promod design, and be done with it, based on the fact that you are running a 540 with pressure to boot. Pan design played a big part in my problems, and didn't have good luck with ANY pump till i got a good pan on it, now all it puts in the puke tank is a bit of oil and water/alky mix, and less than an ounce per run.

Has anyone used one of these? seems pretty straight forward & it kind of makes sense to adjust the amount of vacuum seen by the motor ahead of the motor & not increase the amount of flow through the motor to reduce the vacuum.

Im currently doin a f2r setup and im going to use my vacuum pump

Please excuse my ignorance.....
Is the vacuum drawn from a source like both valve covers?
With a vacuum pump - no breather would be required or wanted?

I'm thinking about trying a simple Ford pump on my Vortech supercharged 360 Mopar.
I'm currently putting about 16psi of boost to it and it does in fact push blowby out of the breather.
If I can stop the "leakage" and possibly increase power some then it's all good!

To answer your ?s vacum is drawn usually from one valve cover. You definatly wouldnt want a breather the better sealed the motor is the better the pump will work. I used to not run a pump and was constanly fighting oil leaks since the pump have had no problems at all. I dont know why I didnt do it sooner

Thanks for the info!!

Now all I gotta do is find a spot to mount it and get it to work with the serpentine belt stuff.

I'm switching to a single turbo system - so that should free up some room for another belt driven accessory.

Dont forget that your dipstick is gonna leak as well (if you have one).
