View Full Version : Racism, is it really gone?

Does racism still exist in the United States? I believe over the past 50 years it has not changed. Although it is not as public as it once was it is still here. People are forced to not be racist, but does that mean they’re not? Affirmative Action proves this stuff is still around. If it did not exist would we sill need it? I often sit with people who will comment racial remarks here and there. It is never done in front of the “kind” it is being talked about. I often wonder what is said about me behind my back. To be honest it really doesn’t matter, but I would have to be an idiot to think it doesn’t. We have radical groups here of all kinds with the KKK being on of them. Do they still exist? Is this not an extremist group? What sets them aside from the Taliban? Do we wait for a world turning event to react to it? Isn’t that how we got here now? Although racism will always exist (even though people will deny it) there is little we can do about peoples thought process. Why is that? Would tougher laws stop it? Would over throwing the KKK stop it? Would making people who even think it spend time in jail for it stop it? I don’t believe anything can stop it. But I do believe when reporters only target a select group for their 6:00 PM news it doesn’t help. We are not taught racism by our parents, we are taught about it on TV. Crime has come down in the past 10 years by 20% but the coverage of crime has increased by 600%. Everywhere you look its another black man, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cubin, Arab etc etc… “We report you decide” is the slogan for one of the major networks. If they only report 99% minority criminal and report 1% majority criminals, what choice do I have to decide? Is crime only present in low income areas? Is a minority really given an equal chance in all cases? Is crime nonexistent with a majority group? Look at our capital and ask yourself again… This is one of two rants today.. Later I will talk about immigration.. Stay tuned…

There's no racism here in Michigan. Why don't you load up your camel and ride your dune coon ass up to Howell, MI. There's some guys in white robes and hoods that would LOVE to meet a fine young American like you.

It is GONNA get worse.....why because slowly but surely AMERICA is losing it IDENTITY!!!!!
It is not a melting pot it is now a tolerance pot with cutural flavors.
There are interest groups that want to keep people isolated to be totally dependent on them for selfish reasons.
As long as there are agendas like this......we will be slowly hyphenating apart.
This is why I am a AMERICAN <----First that happens to be Black. All the hyphen does is divide.
Everytime I see a form that says African American.....that drives me up the wall. I am going to start marking it out and writing in....AMERICAN - Black. I am proud to be an American.....and it should be first in my mind.

Well Sledge it takes a huge man to say American First......Reminds me of a story a man told me during WW2....There was a job opening at a Factory the owner had 40+ people for one opening....He asked one question .....What Nationality are you? (group question) he went around the room....English someone said, Greek said another.....my friend was a teenager then....when it came around to him....He said I'm an AMERICAN.......Needless to say....he got the job!!....Don't matter our Color Religion....whatever....WE ARE AMERICANS FIRST.....If you took Notice after 9/11 there was NO Racism.....didn't matter the Color.....All were digging side by side to free the victoms......That shows me we can do it  ....if we're in a pinch

I have to disagree with you Monty on racism not being taught by our parents. It starts there...and is re-enforced by cultural biased mass media. I know what it is like to have a 4 or 5yr old point at me and say, "Mommy is that a nig&*#?" That crap starts at home for some. I am happy to say it has gotten better to some extent. But I still run into it on a daily basis.
I get upset with the media's bias in reporting. It is not news anymore it is "Infotainment" all in the quest of ratings. This realization was when I started wondering where else was the news media "filtering and processing" the information that was being presented.

The labels are where it all starts!! I’m an American.. You’re an Arab... I’m an Arab you're an African... WTF!!! How about we all put HUMAN in front of our names and move on with life.. Hi I’m HUMAN Monty pleased to meet you. I bleed red just like you.. I hurt just like you.. I cry just like you.. I laugh just like you.. If everyone in this world was blind and def would we still have labels? Let’s move on from all these stupid ass religious and ethnic labels and treat each other as we are HUMANS!!! We frigen treat animals better!!! And people wonder why there is so much hate in this world... We act as each country is a football team and we need to bash their brains in to make us feel better.. This goes for every country on this planet!!! But yet every country on this planet says "we want peace" They should all say "we want a piece of the pie"!!!

The US in many ways has less racism than many countries. Can we say terrorist attack based on this? Doesn't matter race, creed, nationality etc... you will be disliked by some...hell maybe even many. But the US isn't as bad as many make it out to be. Go back thru history in Europe and see what has changed...not much.

No racism is not gone. It has turned several corners though. Now most racism is a percieved type of racism. Meaning some people are expecting to encounter racism in all that they do and in everyplace they go. They may or may not run acroos any racism, but as long as they are expecting it they will be seeing it even where none exists.
Racism is still getting fed down the throats for all who have an ear to hear, by self made leaders who feed off of the negatives they spew and teach to the vulnerable. They in their own way are keeping racism alive in the hearts of those who will listen.
Unfortunately there are a FEW Hard Core racists today in 2008 in our country. Those few Hard Core Racists that spew hate, prejudices, are equal opportunity and their brands of racism knows no color except it is any color or race different than they are. Racists can be White, Latiino, Black, Asian, Indian, Arab, Jew, or anything on this planet.
Perhaps if all the David Dukes, All Sharptons, Jacksons, etc. and racist organizations would just suddenly dry up and fade to nothingness, we would all be better off and not be constantly having it thrown in our faces, so we could live The Dream.
Judge me by the content of my heart and the charactor you see in me and the ourward examples showing the fruits of who I am. Don't judge me by my color or my race. This should equally apply to everyone of us.

The mid east...that sounds like a great place for you to get away from those nasty bikers
Utah has phuked you up, cause yor only reading what you want to in those charts...and apparently you missed this:
Other factors affecting crime levels are:
a. Difference in legal and criminal justice systems
b. Rates of crime report and police recording
c. Differences in the point at which a crime is measured – some countries believes it is the time when the offense is reported; others only do the recording when a suspect in identified and the papers are transferred to the prosecutor
d. Differences in the ruling of which multiple offenses are counted
e. Differences in the lost of offenses to be included in the whole crime figures
f. Differences in data quality
BTW your travels ever take on the road north of Liberty going to Logan...

In my worthless opinion, I feel that there are 3 basic stems of racism today.
First, is the Government mandated programs for Social Equality. Meaning the Minority's being selected above and beyond that of all other people, and the racial "quotas/goals" for employment. When you have 20 people vying for the same job, and the color of the skin is the only deciding factor, YOU WILL PROPOGATE RACISM. Whether its 20 people or 20 contractors, you will get the same results. Especially when that person is later said to come in late, poor job performance, etc., and is protected by his/her race.
Second, is the percentages of races on social programs, collecting for doing nothing to help themselves out of their plight. (Again, the Government is to blame for the way they contruct their catchnet)
Third, is using the Race Card to their advantage. When an American with African ethnicity is accused of a crime, or is being told "no", and they immediately say they have been discriminated against, it further creates the divide. Is it because they were constantly late? Poor job performance? General lack of work ethic?
Its ironic. You see all these MTV videos showing thugs with their pants around their ankles, tons of jewelry, and a general promotion of anti social behavior. What was your first thought? African Ethnicity? I was talking about the Goths. Now, why would you respect a African ethnic person over a Goth when they both show the same (but different) disdain over mainstream America? The root of their individuality is the cause of their "dis" respect. They STRIVE to be different, but really dont want to be recognized as such. They want all the same as "mainstream" but do not want to follow mainstreams ways. Sorry. HUMAN NATURE comes into play.
Racism started with cavemen. We were very leary of people who didnt carry the same characteristics as we do. If they dressed differently, looked different, etc. caused us great concern, because we were not comfortable with it. People that looked different behaved different. It was evolution that created this trait in humans. Much the same in the canine or feline worlds. Coyotes and dogs dont intermix. Lions and Cheetahs dont mix. Why? The genetics will not allow the species to interact.
We would like to think we have evolved somewhat. A high percentage of people still sleep at night, and not in the day. Our poor nightsight caused us to sleep at night and forage by day. Its a tough battle to overcome. When we introduce ANTI racism laws, they have to be times so that they are not racist laws in their own right. I believe we have come far enough as a society to remove these racist barriers, and ALLOW ALL HUMANS to be EQUAL, with no advantage. Give advantage to NO ONE, and you will be treated equal. Give someone an advantage, and all the others will consider him as inadequate.
What would you guys say if I wanted a 4 second spot? Same thing.

Of course we still have racism. I can't imagine the day will come when the world will be purged of this cancer, unfortunately. Maybe its part of the human condition........who knows. The best we can hope for at least for now is to make sure its not acted upon. And for those that think the USA is bad, open your eyes and look at the rest of the world.

Kinda hard for me to say, but here goes.
I was a big-time racist awhile back. Hated anyone and anything that was black. Constantly looking for "them" and distancing myself from "them". Then, about 10 years ago, I just woke up and realized what is the point? I opened my eyes and saw that color had nothing to do with shitty people. It is just the way humans are made. A failed creation in which ALL colors, races, religions have the SAME flaw, being human. I am no longer a racist person. I see good in all colors (if it is present) and see bad in all colors.
And, just for the record, Monty, my father had a HUGE part in my racist views..... He won't change even when I point out his inaccuracies. Oh well. I have lived and learned....

Getting back to this thread, there is one form of racism I haven't seen mentioned. I'm referring to "internal" racism, for lack of a better term. Read below and if you have a better term feel free to speak.
By that I mean, being a white guy, if I choose to hang out with people who are of a different race, and other white people give me shit for it, that is not just racism toward the people I'm with, but racism toward me in a way. They are pressuring me to change my behavior to adhere to their racist beliefs. I've seen it go in both directions.
When I was in high school, I was friends with a guy a year ahead of me, who just happened to be black. He and I were on the track team together, hung out, got along great, and it never occurred to either of us that we looked different. When he graduated he went to a small college in the Midwest. He left after his freshman year, moved back to his parents' house and attended community college, for reasons nobody really knew. He didn't talk about it for a long time.
It turns out there was a "black student union" (I forget the exact term)- a group of black students at the college who were very militant, and apparently bitter and distrustful of anyone who was not part of their group. My friend's parents worked at a different university, were well educated and somewhat strict. As a result, my friend was quiet, hard working, well read and well spoken. The student group gave him shit for "not being black enough", because he didn't "talk black", meaning he didn't use the slang terms and euphemisms popular among black youth at the time. He got more shit for being a 4.0 student and volunteering for extra projects, groups, etc., because that made him the "white man's pet". Then he got more shit for hanging out with "white folk", regardless of the fact that he had friends, who happened to be white, that he had known for years. The last straw was when he briefly dated a white girl. The black students literally started talking about him being lynched.
My point of this long winded story is that I believe that often racism is perpetuated and thrust upon us not by people of a different race, but by people who are of the same race as us.

Excellent post Greg2.....I've seen it happen myself. Elementary school for me was probably REAL CLOSE to 60% white 40% black.....so was jr. high......high school was 50-50.......I just did not grow up in the whole racist environment. My dad owned his own small business and was screwed out of payment in the form of bad checks or no-shows by just as many white folks as black, yellow and brown.........I am now in that SAME position.......My dad judged folks by actions.....I the same.
Growing up I also saw black kids being riddiculed and taunted by other blacks for simply hanging out with me, a white dude....Not as many whites gave me shit about hanging out with him as blacks gave him shit about hanging out with me...It blew my mind then and still does today!
What REALLY blew my mind was in my senior year the announcement was made that a majority black high school was closing and the students at that school would then be part of the district as my high school, which was currently 50-50......The black kids that CURRENTLY went to my high school were FREAKING OUT..........They did not want ANYTHING to do with....and I quote them "those black people"...............You see it is usually not about color.....it's about character......BUT somehow those two become blurred into one........By BOTH whites AND blacks!

When I was in school I had friends across the whole spectrum (black, white, redneck, druggie, prep, nerd ,jocks) and never got crap from really anyone about who I hung out with. Only time I can think of anyone giving me crap was when a friend of mine and I were horsing around a little and some guy I didn't really know came up and asked me if I needed some help dealing with this "nigger", after I cracked his jaw for him he figured out I didn't. Guess he figuered that since I was wearing blue jeans, cowboy boots, Hank Jr cap and Confederate Flag belt buckle I was a racist like he was.
I would imagine racism started long before there was even a way to record it. Racism exist in every country and every race. Colored people are racist towards other colored people with lighter skin, white race, mexican race, etc. White people are racists towards the exact same races and it goes on and on. It seems we are all a little conceided about ourshelves and believe we are better than others for reasons such as, color, economic stature, education, politics, hell the list goes on for ever. Until we all (every race) learn to except that we as an individual are no better than ,and more important than any other single human being on this earth (who is poorer, uglier , fatter , less educated, etc.) there will always be racism and hatred in the entire world. From what I have seen we are no where near close to even starting to think like this so there will always be hatred and racism. It is very sad we are this closed minded.
Kind of an interesting thing, during the past couple of years I've spent a lot of time in Jersey City and Manhattan, plus surrounding areas. Compared to the midwest & south, they're what I would consider as a "Cosmopolitan Bubble".
Very common to see highly successful people of all races, and although the people can generally be more abrasive there seems to be a widespread understanding that participation in racism is a loosing battle & a waste of time.
Something most of us try to do is judge others and we tend to fail miserably at it. There's no way we can look at a stranger and recognize what their potentials truly are, and likewise there's no way we can accurately predict what they know or what they wll say & do.
Supremacy is nothing more than an artifical means of security for some, and it comes at the expense of others. It's widely known that people under suppression will tend to become what their suppressors are telling them they are.
Example: A father calls his son an idiot and a failure all the while that he's growing up. What are the odds that the son will eventually accept this as truth?
Stereotypes work the same way. More or less, people have a way of knowing how they're being perceived by others. That usually causes a behavior shift where a person will reinforce those perceptions as a way to avoid conflict.
Consider how frequently some races are faced with pre-judgement from others and it's pretty easy to see that a lot of stereotypical behaviors are nothing more than people who do not want trouble accomodating others who have hostile feelings towards them.

Good Post!
Monty, how can you say that? Do you travel outside of the US?
Australia has had race riots, France has problems, Briton has problems...and bunches of those fuks with the rags in the mid east blow the shit outta each other every day because of racism in one form or another. Doesn't make it look so bad here, does it.
Just why do you think we're so bad here? because we can talk about it? Because those that choose not to be raciest, can?
Or do you just like pointing at the US cause it's here and has been the big dog for a long time?
If you are quote Australia, then quote it correctly, Australia has had a race riot, not plural, just singular!!!! And we are deeply ashamed of that one event.
Don't drag us into your issues!!!

I had a sociology professor at VA tech my junior year that asked me if I was a racist and I proceeded to say no. He then told me that VA tech was at the time 90% white. And he asked me that if VA Tech was 90% black would I still be there? The answer to that question was NO. He then called me a racist, which after that analogy I couldnt argue with him. At that point I really paid good attention in that class from then on. Dr. Unnever was probably the best professor I ever had he made you think about shit like that.
