I am looking to build my 2000 Z28 into a 9 sec street car.I already have a 9" rear,suspension,etc...I want to run nitrous.Any sugestions on a motor combination. It doesn't matter if the car runs 9.99 or 9.00.It's for personal use and not for competition.I just want a fast street car.
Thanks for your help,
Mark

Well, you could go a variety of ways with it. Most of the LS1 nitrous kits that are out there will all support up to a 300 shot pretty easily. There are certain logisitical issues for making it reliable. Simply put, the stock pistons won't take a lifetime of abuse on nitrous. They typically shatter from a lot of the abuse. So, a good rod and piston combination would be a nice start.

From there, a good head and cam package can pick up the rest. Most stock cubic inch combos can get into the 9's pretty regularly now. One local guy here put 300 to his stock short with heads and a cam and ran 9.8x last week. The issue is it will not take that forever.

There are close to stock displacement motors running mid to high 9's and remain streetable. There are a few that are running bottom 9's or high 8's but are more race carish. So, you have to really find out what you want as far as the combo goes. When I ran my 382ci LS1 I had at least 150 nitrous passes on it at 200HP and several passes on a 300HP shot. Consistently ran 9's every time I wanted. With the use of a delay the car would consistently run whatever I wanted it to. Beyond that, you can really cook up packages from mild to wild. So, some extra input would be needed to really figure out what you want to build up.

Transmission choice is another big deal. With a 6 speed you are going to break parts regularly. 4L60E's need some work as well, but are much better from a consistency and ease on parts perspective. Full on setups are using Glides or TH400 with a good converter.

From there the rest of the options are merely extras. Most oriented around cutting weight in one form or another.

Hydraulic roller 408 roughly 11:1 with a 250hp wet kit, with a sticky tire and she's into the 9's.

If you were so inclinded to install a th-350/400 with a brake you'd just make things easier on yourself.
