Why would a good running 02 Z28 SS all of a sudden lose oil pressure?
Is this common?

Could possible be the piston in the oil pump got hung up. There were some problems with castingh flash in some pumps.

That would be the first thing I checked. We have even had the Meling after market pump stick at 100psi and 0psi.

Has anyone recently installed heads or had the oil pump off ? If so could be loose bolts on the oil pump body.

Did you check it with a manual gauge to verify if the sending unit is working right?

Thanks for the replies yall.
This thing is bone stock except for a brand new LS2 clutch and fly wheel, new master and slave cylinder. Its my ex-wifes car. We bought the car in 02 with only 3000mi on it. Its been a really good car. The car did get a lil air-born, landing in a parkinglot early this year, but ran and drove fine
up until about 3 months after the new clutch job, which by the way, when she noticed the car running real bad from no oil pressure, she said she also noticed the clutch pedal was lower than it was that morning. Strange i thought.

Of course the dealership wanted $700 just to dig in and see what actually happened. Phuck that! I can do that at home for free.
Bastards also said since the clutch and flywheel are not original equipment, they would not warranty any clutch issues.

Their tech advisor, who doesnt work there anymore, never sadi shit about not being warrantied.

The rods knocking verfied the oil pressure. lol

Spordacially I have seen 6speed or M6 transmissioned ls1 engines with thrust bearing wear issue that cuased low oil pressure and bearing failures. It is definately time to pull it apart and have a look inside.

You're not running a Fram oil filter, are you? I've seen LOTS of oil pressure issues on LSx engines with them.

I would change the oil filter! regardless of brand. I have seen that a few times.

The number 1 cause of no oil pressure in an LS1 is the relief valve getting hung up. Pull the pan and remove the relief plug, clean and reinstall. There is some red loctite that is used from the factory that locks the relief valve inplace, end result is no oil pressure.

as above-

while the pan is off -check the pick-up as well-just to see whats going on-

but it should be the relief valve-the actual oil pumps never shits itself unless something goes through it-

Also.... I've seen a lot of guys with the same problem being the rubber O-ring on the pump itself. If it's not seated or nicked/torn you're just sukin' air and OP falls off or leaves completely.

If I was the betting type, I'd say that's the culprit.

Sounds like the thrust bearing got torn up and would result in rod bearing failure also.

From what I have seen the thrust bearing fialure put enough fine grit in the motor to jam up the bypass valve. Usually the culprit.
