Does a Steering Wheel quick disconnect have to be SFI approved to be used in a race car? The NHRA rule book says any commercially available disconnect is acceptable. It says nothing about having to be SFI approved. Anyone know????? Quartermax Components has an SFI approved & non-SFI approved models & I'm just trying to decide on which one I really need.

Stephen,
Buy the best one you can, the more splines the better in my opinion. Just this year alone I witnessed 2 accidents that were caused by a defective disconnect (and not the driver being careless either).
One of the cars was just recently updated and the car owner gave the chassis guy the one he wanted to use, however the chassis guy (well known chassis guy) told him point blank "why did you waste your money on that one, the kind I use NEVER fail..."
my humble opinion

the biggest problem is that the driver does not check the wheel before the launch to make sure it has fully locked.i like the strange piece because it has a large detent.

I have had that one in my car since 1999. I like the Stange pice better but the Wilwood will work fine.
Also, I try to not take the wheel off unless I absolutely have to. Most people should be able to get in and out of a race car without taking the wheel off. If I can get my fat ass in and out nobody else should have an excuse!
