SBC with AFR 220 heads and a Dart Wilson intake. The problem is in the intake runner to head area, the intake hits the valve cover. I have a set of Edelbrock aluminum valve covers right now with the flange notched to clear. I also have a set of the GM racing covers that I'd like to use but there is no flange to notch on these. What can I do???

A fabricated valve cover does not have an outter lip on them. You can get a set of them but they cost some pretty good coin. Moroso has some.. Check them out on there site.. :D

Sometimes you need to machine the top of the intake runners.... right at the valvecover area....you'll actually see a lot of performance manifolds like this....

I think I would have the same problem with the fabricated style valve covers as they appear to be off the same design. What would be the best way to machine the manifold for clearance? Any particular angle?

Just square with the casting.... just dust off enough to clear the covers, and run about 3/8 to 1/2 inchs back....

Yup, I had to lay the top edge of the SuperVic intake back to clear my 210's and the 220's, in fact I had to notch the rocker cover rail on the head, AND put a 45° bevel on the top of the intake to get good clearance. A sharp flat file will do the trick in just seconds.
