View Full Version : By-passing PCV System

I am new to the LS1 game as of a few weeks ago. The '98 WS6 I came across doesn't have a complete PCV system. Not sure what I should do. Everything appears to be stock with 68k on the clock. On the driver's side valve cover, there is only a straight plastic fitting with a 3/8 nipple with nothing connected to it. It seems to spraying an oily mist all over the engine compartment. I have seen some pictures of a breather on the passenger side valve cover that seems to fit right over the original factory oil fill tube. Where do they find these?? What do I have to do to by-pass the PCV system without screwing up the computer?? If this is not a good idea, what should I do??

There is supposed to be a plastic tube connecting the fitting in the LH cover to the RH side valve cover towards the rear then runs where the PCV connects to the intake. Its pretty common for that plastic tubing to fall apart. Number 222 in the attached pic is what you are missing most or part of.
PN 12560692, pretty expensive but there are plenty of 98s around in junkyards.
Its supposed to be a closed system but you could get away with a breather on the LH side, just make sure the pipe is blocked off from the PCV on the RH side. I just used one of those little K&N clamp on 3/8 or whatever breathers back there. It will throw off the idle fuel calibration a little but the stock PCM has a pretty good range of self adjustment, if no check engine now a breather wont change anything.

Thanks a bunch, your info is much appreciated. Exactly what item number is the actual PCV valve in the pic ??? So, you still use the original oil fill cap, and have the fittings plugged on the intake that were hooked from the pass valve cover?? So, then did you just get rid of item #222 and also plug the two small tubes on the pass valve cover as well?? No "check engine" light yet as it is with open tube.
Thanks again for the info. Bad ass T/A btw.

Both valve covers are more or less tied together with that #222 and the PCV valve is in the middle of that plastic pipe assembly. The fitting on the front of the RH valve cover is to the throttle body, thats where it gets its metered fresh air from.
There is a dozen ways you can do the PCV on these cars, if its just going to be a driver I would just try to pick up the stock stuff and hook it all up. If you block the PCV and just put some breathers on it it will get a little stinky under the hood when it idles. Plus these are known for sucking oil into the intake through the stock PCV system so some use oil separators in the PCV line.

Thanks once again, item #222 retails at my local dealer for $126.67. So, I guess for now I will start searching the bone yards. Yeah, my plans are just for a driver, but I still like the simple idea of breathers. We'll see what I find. Your info has been a huge help.

I may even have that pipe assembly from my car laying around somewhere, if you can find anything shoot me a PM on here and see if I can find it.
