replacing cylinder head o-rings

I was wondering if you have any advice on how to remove the stainless oring from a cylinder head ? Is there some kind of magic trick or do I just dig it out and hope that I don't screw up the head surface?

I do not have an actual dental pick, But I have a small set of Snap-On picks that I have tried using with no luck so far. I'm worried that I'm going to mess up head surface.
