I'm installing new ring and pinion my question is how do I adjust the shims ,when I need to install the bearing 1st in order to check,WTF do I have to pull the bearing off every time to add or subtract a shim?

i think i remember reading that they use the old bearing and cut out the cage for it so that it will just slide off an on for setting up gears.

You have the rite idea xpndbl3 but all you have to do to the bearing cage is take a drill or dremmel with a sanding cartridge and take a bit of material out of the centre so the bearing slides on the shaft of the pinion without any pressing . You will have to put a new set of bearings on this when your done setting this up .

Start out with a .030 shim and check the pattern. If you need assistance, post up some pics of the pattern and I'll tell you which way to go. Stay around .008-.009 backlash.
