Dingell to propose 50 cent gasoline tax increase
By Chris Good
July 07, 2007
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell (D-Mich.) will propose a new carbon tax that would increase the gasoline tax by 50 cents, the lawmaker said in an interview on C-SPAN's ‘Newsmakers’ airing Sunday.
In the interview, Dingell acknowledged that voters may not be willing to bear the cost of limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and that he would propose the new tax “just to sort of see how people really feel about this.”
“I sincerely doubt that the American people are willing to pay what this is really going to cost them,” Dingell said in the interview.
Since 1955 Dingell has represented Dearborn, MI, home to Ford Motor Company’s headquarters. The Michigan lawmaker has said he will push legislation in the fall that would restrict carbon emissions from both automobiles and electric utilities.
In addition to raising the gasoline tax, Dingell’s new proposal would institute a “double digit” tax on each ton of carbon dioxide emitted.

As a transplant into this place, it tend to agree. What it really seems like to me is that you have a couple of liberail cities that hold a HUGE population i.e. Detroit, flint, etc. that vote these guys in. You get out side of those, into the country and you find a more conservative attitude. I can't wait to leave this state....but it's going to be some time before that happens....:(

That is the same as most places...the cities to tend to be more liberal and the rural areas more conservative. See it in the South around Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, Memphis, etc...

If you travel around MI, you'll find that most of the state would be delighted if Detroit would float down the river. People in upstate NY wish the same about NYC. Like patman said, however, those cities have such a huge population that they can literally out-vote the entire rest of the state.

These cocksuckers keep getting elected. People should know what to expect. What a pity most of the voting population is so uninformed or just plain stupid.

I see you've been there, did ya bring your riffle? LOL
I forgot Carl Leven, he's a real work of art, an how about Charlie Rangel.
Mi. has the highest unemployment in the nation along with the most forclosures an murder rate, why is this?
Greg2

The unemployment and foreclosure rates are linked. I think it's a little misleading. There are parts of Michigan and certain industries doing very well, but they don't offset the struggles of the auto industry. Have you been to Ann Arbor lately? Between the medical, high-tech, pharmaceuticals, computer, etc., industries, that town is doing nicely.
One of the main problems is that the Detroit metro area and it's millions of residents have depended exclusively on one industry for over 50 years. If the economy was more diversified it would soften the blow.
As for the politicians, the old and accepted notion is that the Democratic party is "pro-union" and the Republican party is "pro-corporation". The union rank and file has faithfully given their votes to the Democrats for generations. Republican candidates are handicapped the day they start a campaign.
When it comes to Detroit, again, the city itself is 82% black- a group that has traditionally aligned itself with the Democrats. Between the city population and the union membership, you have a group of voters that is so large the rest of the state cannot outvote them, especially when voter turnout is generally so dismal.
Add to that Ann Arbor, which is an ultra-liberal college town, much like Austin here in TX or Berkley in CA. The people there think Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi aren't liberal enough.

Add muskegon to that as well.
I think detroiters voting Kwame back in office speaks volumes about their own incompetency. Oh wait, hes the "young, cool, black mayor" and we dont want to hold anyone down. Its a shame, he wasnt half bad when he was in the state senate. Now hes more occupied with letting everyone know hes the mayor when he needs to be doing what a mayor is supposed to do. He acts like being the mayor makes you a celebrity.

Actually it does, which is why maybe he should not have used tax payer money to make double lease payments on a Lincoln Navigator for his wife.

Or pay for 4 superbowl tickets on the tax payers dime. Or take a vacation to hawaii with your ENTIRE family for 10 days on tax payers dime and say it was business related. Or employ your family members with 6 figure jobs who have no qualifications. Or have a 12 man entourage of your buds from school as body guards because his life is in such great danger. Funny how the mayor of NYC and DC only have 1 body guard though?

The biggest loser of the 2000s, outside of New Orleans, where hurricane-related losses (http://money.cnn.com/2007/06/25/news/companies/bc.allstate.mississippi.reut/index.htm?postversion=2007062518) drove more than half the city's residents away, has been Detroit. Motown endured a net loss of 80,000 people during the 2000s, leaving the population at less than half of its 1950s heyday.
