I painted a door with epoxy primer, then base coat, then one coat of clear. My question is after the epoxy primer coat, it kinda looked like the primer had a textured look to it. Now i know there has to be more that 1 coat of clear on it but, will more coats of clear even that look out or should i just start back at the epoxy coat and then coat a sandable primer over that before applying the base coat. The door is a all fiberglass deal. Im not a painter either, i think thats obvious, i saw on the other thread that some other kind of primer was used before the color was put on, and it was put on top of the epoxy primer.
I did not thin the epoxy primer either could that have helped the way it would lay on the surface better. Or do i need to add another step of primer before i put the base coat down. Thanks for any help.

when you sprayed the epoxy primer on you might not have taken all the mold release off and as soon as you applied the clear coat which was thined out caused the epoxy prime to lift you may have to sand it all down again hard to tell need to see it....

Thanks for the reply, there was sandable primer on first, then all body work, which wasnt much was done and then i sprayed this primer. Im not sure but i think the primer was sprayed to thick, i was using a true hvlp system. Gonna try and get someone with more knowledge to take a look. thanks

If there was texture in the epoxy you will never hide it. You can clear all you want and even sand it smooth but the color will have texture. It is all in the prep, the smoother it is before paint the nicer it looks. I'm not sure what brand you are using or if you can top coat the clear with base (some don't work well) But you will have to sand it smooth and reshoot the base then clear. It will probably be best to sand all the clear off so do don't have issues.

I had a friend look at it last night, and said the same thing rick, he advised me to 500 sand the clear off to the base and recoat the base, then apply the clear. Man i thought painting was going to be easier than this, man was i wrong.

You guys were right on the money, i went and sanded everything down to a nice flat surface, re sprayed the clear, and bamm looks great. On the rest of the car i went out and got the surfacer primer and, sprayed that on top of the epoxy primer, and sanded it down to 400 and then sprayed the base coat on top of that, then 2-3 coats of clear. It is smooth. We then 1200 wet sanded and then 2000 and then did the buff. I cant believe the results out of a regular garage and plastic hung, unreal. That surfacer primer deal really did the trick, i read that on another post, thanks guys.
