Just wondering about this topic. i know that quench is very important in any motor. Guess what Im wondering is should i have my block zero decked or leave the piston slightly below the deck. My JE pistons call for a 9'' deck hieght, produce a 14.1 comp. The combo is a 420 sbc . will be sprayed from a fogger. It is also a 23* headed motor.

I've been told by the best that .063 quench is ideal for a nitrous motor.
.020 in the hole and .043 gasket was what was recommended so we are doing it. The block should be here any day and the pistons are being built by Nelson.

Somewhat depends on how much nitrous, this has been discussed at length recently though. Do a search in this section, there is a ton of info already there.
In general, big nitrous apps require little to no 'quench'.

Why not .062 or .064?? JK.
I'm at .049/.050 with no problems. 15 to 1 compression spraying a 33 pill. I'll see if it will take more or if my quench is to tight.

Why .063 - because Mike Who, Mike Nelson says so!!! hahaha
We'll be spraying upwards of 500hp on my 406 15:1 small block with the help of Mr. Nelson.

I plan on spraying about the same. I was thinking zero deck and thick gaskets.

Zero DEck is an Old Wives Tale that I lived through. We used to do anything we could to get the perfect zero deck. Waste of time. Waste of money. Cut the dech so it is square but forget all the extra crap to get a zero deck. Most of the baddest engines in drag racing now do not have zero decks.

Depends on the rod material, length, and RPM you'll turn it. 10 in the hole is good for aluminum rod small blocks, and use a 0.050-0.060 gasket.....mls preferrably.
