anybody know if you can mount the holley blue pump upside down?

No but I have seen people mount them sideways and still work.

mine got really hot really quick mounted upside down. Not sure why though as the fuel doesn't cool the little electric motor.

I called Holly's tech support with that same question a few years ago. They said that the blue pump should always be mounted upright. If it is mounted sideways or upside down, and the pump seal fails it will leak fuel into the electrical motor and cause a fire hazard. I figured better safe then sorry, and no longer have Holly pumps in my car.

I found a spot to mount the pumps and are upright. When one fails ill replace it with a big pump
