Hello,

Found the limits of my gearset a couple weeks ago. Have a Coan Powerglide I got back in 02. Has a pro brake, 1.76 OEM gears, and whatever else they do to them. It was originally built for a stock 427 with a 300 shot. Now I run a 540 with a 300 shot.

Had to replace the case in 03 because the trans yoke busted and hit the tail shaft housing breaking it and the case.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. About 100' out, it BANGED and free reved. Shifted to 2nd and it pulled enough to get me off the track.

Tore it down a couple nights ago (don't really know anything about transmissions, but had someone who does helping me). The gearset sheered most of the teeth on everything and broke one of the smaller gears in the planetary apart. The case holding the planetaries was brazed shut, but was busted apart.

Other than the gearset it all looks pretty good. The drum that holds the clutches has a burn mark on it, but can't feel anything with my fingernail.

Which gearset should I go with? The car is a 3400 lbs street camaro that is driven quite a bit. I see that Coan, ATI, & TCI all have heavy duty 1.76 gearsets. Are any better than the other for my application?

Should I replace anything else while I'm in there?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Your best bet is to go with the tried and true 1.80 straight cut gearset as a complete package assembled. There are many manufacturers of them with several different options. The prices range from approx 1100.00-1600.00 but there is always a sale on them around this time.
Other than that and some gaskets etc , you should have what you need.
