We are in the process of converting the car from 12V to 16V with an alternator. We would like to know if you know of any problems with the FAST ECU running with higher voltages.

I would ask FAST themselves to cover you ars.
I have see alot of melted ecu's due to voltage spikes primarly in-op regulators going to full voltatge. Usually happed when the bat cables were disconnected while vehicle was running.
but... you never know

I run the old style FAST with a 16V battery with no problems.

Technically they should be good to 32volts, intermittently. I would check with them because if you are running an alternator you will have 18-20volts in your system, and can spike well past the 32volt threshhold (so far I am the only company that limits the possible spikes to 32volts, :) ). The two examples on here so far are with just batteries, so they were 17.2 volts and falling.

If you are going to run an alternator, why not run a 12 volt system with a big enough alternator to power your system. Lot less headaches.

One thing you might have to change (I don't remember if the first fast had this) is the Injector Opening time vs Battery voltage setting.

Thanks for the replies. I have been waiting for FAST to respond to my email. I will look to see if there is injector/voltage openning time setting. I have adjusted the injector openning time but don't remember anything else in there. The alternator voltage is why I posted, not concerned about 16V but over 20 worries me.

We have ran both the old classic FAST unit and the XFI FAST box on 16v with absolutely no problems. Both are 16v alternator equipped.

This has been on 2 separate cars ,totaling 4 ECUs...all ran perfectly fine.

I am always back to the "If you are running an alternator, no need to go to 16volt system" If the alternator is capable of charging the system properly, there is no benifit going from 14volts to 17volts. i.e. you will not go faster with the engines you have. Start reving over 12,000 and then you could use the extra voltage. The only advantage I can think of is faster starts. (Starter has approx. 40& more power on 16volts over 12) My two cents.

Jim, When it is all said and done and the guy responsible for lugging around your charger and stuff is on his death bed, bet he would like to get all that time back. :) Just having an alternaotr maybe over rated, but having the proper one certainly isnt.

They guy lugging my BAd Assed Powermaster 16V charger is related. He's stuck with me and that job. I only run a single batter too. How much will an alternator charge my battery in 7 seconds?

That is not the correct question, The correct question is how little will it let my voltage drop during a run, and how constant will my voltage stay during a run.
Most sensors are just variable resistors so changing input voltages will change the output of the sensors.

My data logger says my voltage doesn't drop. I don't have to ask that question. So how much will an alternator charge a battery during a run? From what I have been told they don't charge at idle, they only charge going down the track, they don't like to be spun at the rpm most drag cars run. FAST systems start correcting injector pulse width at 13.6V. I solved a lot of my erratic fuel delivery problems going to a 16V system. As always, I don't deal with theoretical stuff. I look at real world data and make a decision.

Oh yea, I ran my FAST system for a couple of years with a 16V alternator with no issues.

If you have the right one, you should be charged by the time you hit the line, then while going down the track it is just a matter of keeping up. That is using a 3 second crank time requiring about 15 seconds to recover. As for not charging at idle, quit buying your stuff off Ebay. :)

I would have to agree. The bigginning of the pass was 14.1V and you can see from the graph it stays around 15V through the pass. I don't see that I would gain anything going to 16V system, but I could be wrong!!!!
