Ok...I am getting ready to move into my new house. I am wanting to setup a personal shooting range to use occassionly. Now I could just shoot at a target on a piece of plywood but I would like to have something behind to stop/slow down the bullets. Now before anyone freaks out, the only thing behind me is a mountain. No houses and lots and lots (did I say lots?) of trees. My closest neighbor is to my right side (and 90* to the "proposed" shooting range) about 400 ft or so away with thick woods between us. No one on the left side within a 1/4 mile. Closest neighbor behind me is on the other side of the mountain. And there is no access to the land behind me either, no roads, nothing. Now what would make a good back stop? I would like something that I could move if possible. Don't really want a big mound of dirt in the back yard either. I was thinking of a backboard with layers of 2x6s but not sure how many I would need. I thought about maybe layering a 1/4" piece of steel between them but I am concerned about fragmentation. I plan on shooting only pistols at around 20-25 ft distance.

Get the steel. You should have zero problem with fragmentation. Rifle rounds that is a different story, but you said pistol only so you should be okay.

Colt had a pair of something like that at their test firing range in the basement at the old Hartford plant. It wasn't much bigger either, but I think it had a water basin (The Feds nailed them for lead dust or something). They were pounding on a herd of AR-15s when I was there.

i have built two back stops one for a basement and the other for the back yard. the one in the back yard was built with 1/2 plate steel on a 45angle and a sand catch on the bottom. when your fire the bullet hits the steel and bounces down into the sand. after the back stop was built we built a wood box around it. so now it looks like a shed from the house. or like i was tell a buddy of mine to just buy a cheap shed and build it i there. the plate steel was 3x6 foot and we got it for 200 bucks

How about a nice pile of dirt.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. A pile of dirt would be the be the simplest and cheapest. May do that, I've got plenty of room. But I was wanting to have something moveable but the idea of doing something in a small shed sounds good too....
