View Full Version : Vac Pump Question

I went to the track this weekend and my overflow for the vac pump started puking right after I crossed the finish line. I had only run the engine a few times before I went there and didn't think it would be full after one pass.
I have it plumbed into the front of the valve cover. Do I need to make a baffle or could it be something else?

I have the moroso baffled fitting and I rarely ever have to drain the tank.

I've never run a baffle in the v/c.

If you have any kind of leak in the engine, it causes a 'leak path'. That leak path picks up oil, and deposites it into the tank.

I probably get 1/5 cup of oil in the breather tank after a weekend race...???

An unhealthy engine can creat a leak path too....

Couple more questions for you guys, someone told me it matters which valve cover you draw from, is that true? Mine is in the front of the drivers side valve cover. Also the same guy told me the seal on the front of the crank is suppose to be reversed?

I get about 1/2 a quart in the overflow after a pass. My pick-up is also in the front of the passenger side valve cover. My valve covers have a baffle in them. I have oil drain backs on the heads. When my old motor did this, it was time for head gaskets. This motor leaks pretty bad across the center cylinders even after new head gaskets. Leak your motor down and I think you will find the problem.

1/2 quart??? Good grief we're gonna have to stick 150 pounds on you when you fix that!!!!!!!!!

John Langer

I guess I wont fix it then. 5w-30 at walmart is only $1.57 per quart. Adding 150 lbs to my car would cost $6,700 per race.

I will do a leak down but that was the only pass I made this year and the motor was apart this winter and got new mls gaskets when the heads were surfaced.

I go to the Bruce M school of contingency claiming.

There was no sign of any problem with the head gasket, the block and head pressure tested fine. I'm guessing it was the mls gasket but the surfacing was done to Fel Pro spec R-40-60.
Chris, Marv said you do R-7 if he remembered right. My guy has done several including this one last year with no problems. If it is the head gasket souldn't there be some sign, even after one pass on the motor?
We're going to put new gaskets on then take it to the dyno before it goes back in the car.
