ok i need to go shopping for a gun safe is there any good brands or ones that i should stay away from?

Mine is from bassproshops...its sold as their "redhead" brand but it's a Browning safe. 650lbs, 12/24 guns, UL listed fireproof, the works. Her jewelry and our important documents are in it as well. The only advice i can give is to shop for features and specs, the quality and value will naturally follow.

How big? Handguns or long guns?

I have an inexpensive Sentry Security safe (http://www.securityworld.com/ShopSite/steelsafe.html) that I keep my two handguns, a couple magazines, and anywhere from 200 to 1000 rounds of ammo in. Space is getting tight, though, and with my next handgun purchase, I'm going to have to find a new place to store the ammo.

Always buy bigger than you need "right now." I did that, under pretty strict budgetary constraints however, and now I'm running out of room.
