I am new here and have been reading a ton. I have a 1980 Malibu with a 358 Chevy .040 bore, RHS Pro Action 23 heads (200cc intake, 64cc Chambers), Lunati solid roller 258in/268ex .600in/.618ex with 1.5 rockers, 550 springs, Mahle flat tops with a 750 Holley HP on a Victor jr. Timing is at 38 degrees, Hooker Supers with 1 3/4 tubes to 3" tube and and 2 Flowmasters. Car has a Nine inch with a spool and 4.56, 275/60/15 Mickey Drag Radials. Transbrake and a Powerglide. Don't know converter size, bought the car last year. Seriously considering running D1 Super Street 10.90. Timeslips...

with Hoosier slicks at 12psi
60ft 1.68
330ft 4.822
660ft 7.464
1000ft 9.76
11.72@114.86 at 7100RPM

Next outting

Swithed to the MT Drag Radials @18psi and changed the Autolite plugs to 40 gap
60ft 1.61
11.20@116
made 4 passes that day all 1.614 1.615 for 60 ft and et improved to 11.15@117

First off I would like to hear what options I have with my motor. I am pulling the heads this week to change the head gaskets. If I can get some ideas while I am in there that would rock. I am thinking of a 3 speed and a good converter. I think this car has a ton of potential and after reading here I feel the experience is plentiful and accurate. Opinions needed. If I left something out tell me.
I also just bought a FAST XFI and am looking to change mid season and also building another 358 with GMPP 18 degree heads.

You'd be surprised to find out how much ET a good converter will pick you up.

How much does yours stall on the brake? What rpm are you leaving the line at?

If I footbrake the car it stays put to 2100 and if I brake it 4000. The brake doesn't seem right. I chipped it at 4000 and nothing changed, 60 foot stayed the same and et.

With that size tire a 4.56 and a 3 speed like a 400 with a 3.45 low you will have some issues hooking up. Thats a lot of air for ET Streets fine for DRs but might lower it. Does it spin or hook this will tell what you need to work on first. If it spins, chassis, if it hooks making power. maliburacing.com is a good place too for g-body guys

It hooks! And my bad, they are drag radials.

When shifting to high see what RPM it drops back to, to find the stall your 60 foot may not be changing if it stalls higher than you are launching at on both trys so far.

Yes, if your leaving at your stall speed you won't give the motor a chance to run up on the converter. If it stalls on the brake at 4000, try leaving a 3200-3300 on the 2step.

Weighs more than most Malibus. Mild steel 6 point cage and a glass hood. Everything else is still there, full interior. The car does dead hook, snuck some daylight under the left front tire last time it was out.

If you have room you might add some 1.65 rockers on that cam, watch for coil bind . Whats the cam in at? You might pull a little more if you advance it or retard it a couple depenpending on where it is and the power band of it.
