View Full Version : Street vacuum pump?

Ok, I have searched a bit, but couldn't really find what I was after, so please forgive me if this has been answered.

I want to run a vacuum pump on the street, on a daily driver to be more specific. This will also be based on an A.I.R. pump, used for vacuum duties, and not an aftermarket vacuum pump.

What I was wondering was, what you guys did about seperating the oil from the crankcase gases being pulled, and if you would just drain it after a cruise and pour it back in the engine? For me that's not really an option, or rather not one that I would care to use. I would rather either keep all the oil in the engine (yeah I know, doesn't happen), or have some sort of an auto recycling system, I've actually thought about how to make that work, if there isn't something like that on the market.

Thsi is more of one of those ideas that I would like to do, and since I really should have an A.I.R. pump on the truck, to pacify those e-test guys, why not use it to make more power? ;)

TIA

I wouldn't recycle the oil that goes through my vaccum pump. You can get a Steff's Oil/Air separator to help cut down the oil going through the pump.

Why wouldn't you recycle the oil that goes though the pump?

How effective are those seperators, and how often would I need to empty it?

The amount of oil pulled from the engine I would surmise would be proportional to the amount of vacuum pulled, correct?

So, what is "not too often"?

First question = I'm not sure

Second Question = I'm not sure

If you use a nice baffle at the pump suction point, and a seperator like Jim suggested, it should be livable. I don't think anyone is gonna get to specific there. As not many run vac pumps on daily drivers.

Good luck creating an oil recycle setup without compromising vacuum.

Yeah I think I'm just going to have to build it and see how it goes. The recirc set-ups I have in mind won't effect vacuum, at least not when it matters most. ;)
