Handgun 9mm isn't a bad weapon isn't the greatest either but most of the time the quality on the Beretta's is probably top notch over the others.
.22 rifle is probably the best and cheapest for just going out and plinking around with. You can buy many boxes of .22's for next to nothing.

x2...the 10/22 is a very nice little gun. a also have a ruger mini 14(.223) which i like even more than the 10/22.
Also Scott....depending on the yardage you will be shooting at for plinking, you can also buy 9mm and .40 cal tactical rifles, or carbines rather, from dunhams for pretty cheap. Not sure on the quality of the gun, but if you are confined to a small shooting area it would be a fun gun. They are only accurate up to about 50 yards.

Ed Im a 40 caliber kinda guy but also like the 9 mm's... Both the SIGs I have (226 9mm and 229 40 caliber) shoot about the same with (go figure) the 9 having a little more recoil. But for personal protection I will say the 40 caliber since both guns are the same size and carry almost the same amount of rounds..
