I recently (last fall) purchased a .17 caliber Savage Rifle, I put a Sweet 17 scope on it. This gun rocks, it's fast as hell and very accurate. We sited it in with a 5mph side wind, so quite calm outside. At 100 yards, all three holes touched each other, at 150 you could cover the 3 holes with a dime, at 200 yards you could cover 3 shots with a quarter, at 250 the wind was starting to come into affect and the 3 rounds were within a 2" circle.
I was pretty impreseed, especially since I haven't shot a rifle in about 8 years.

Yep anything inside of 100 yards suffers zero effect of a cross wind. Wait until you get the feel back, you will be banging away at 200 with zero problems with the wind.
I've been seriously considering getting a rifle in the 17 HMR caliber for my next purchase. Pretty amazing how inherently accurate it is, despite how light the bullet is in this cal.

Mike I shoot three .17 centerfires; a 17 Mach4, 17 Javelina and a 17 Super Jet using bullets from 15-30 grains and boy are they are hoot to shoot using more than 17-19 grains of powder. Recoil is nil which allows one to see the bullet impact the target. The Super Jet pushes a 15 grain bullet about 4500 fps and man does it blow up a crow!
I thought about getting a 17 HMR but then tried a 4-5 grains N310 in my 17mach4 and it works like a champ for when I want to shoot a reduced .17 load.

Carl, you would be surprised at the effect that the wind has only ay 100 yards. That's why we use wind flags. I even put up wind flags when I do load development.

I can only speak for what I have taught and we teach our Mariens well more like I used to teach no windage adjustments at the 200 meter line. If you are missing the center at 200, you have other mechanical problems wrong.
I can't speak for every round out there, but wind has zero effect on a 5.56 out of a M-16 at 200 meters.
