Hello,
I installed a good working aluminum case powerglide that came out of my friend's 11 second Chevy II into my 65 Chevy II. It was working fine in his car & worked fine in my car at the very first. Now it does not have drive. It has reverse & low, but engine just flares up on the shift & it will not pull in drive.
I have driven it approximately 10 miles. My car has a blown 350 with about 500 HP. I drove it hard, holding it in low & then shifting into drive. Then all of a sudden, I no longer had drive?
I pulled the pan & the fluid smelled burned & there was metal & black trash in the pan. I know it is wasted & I have sent it out for a re-build.
The only thing I could find wrong in the installation was that my shift linkage from the shifter was not adjusted correctly. When the shifter was in low, the trans was actually between low & drive & not in the low gear detent.
My question is, could the fact that it was not fully in the low detent cause the burn up problem? I did wind it up several time in what I believed to be low gear, then manually shifted into drive at full throttle.
Thanks,
Hippy

That is very likely the cause or at least part of it. Glides are very sensitive to shifter adjustment. I would imagine if low was out of whack then high would be off the same amount which is even worse.

Hope this helps, Hutch
