View Full Version : Converter ? What hits the tires the hardest..

If you have a car with a converter that stalls at say 5000 rpms with an engine that has 800 horsepower ..

Would the car hit the rear tires harder if you two stepped the motor at 3500 rpms, and let the converter "run up" to 5000 rpms.. Or if you put the motor further into it's torque curve by two stepping it at say 4800 rpms..

I've heard arguements both ways, but have seen no proof of either.. Anyone know for sure ??

On my old combo, 496BBC, 800hp and Hughes 9" 6000 spragless converter, it ALWAYS hit harder launching ON the converter. 2-stepping it at any rpm always resulted in a slower 60'. Not all converters are the same in this regard though from what I've heard.

That's kind of what I've seen also.. You may can hit a converter from a dead idle, and have it hit harder..But two stepping at a rpm lower than the stall, only makes one leave slower..

Some cars do react better and some don't . Its all about how much stored energy you can throw at a tire/chassis before it will spin. I have seen some cars get more aggressive leaving at higher rpms but there is usually a reason why. I have seen some cars get more agressive at a lower launch rpm because they dead hook instead of spinning or striking the tire as hard.
A properly setup car and converter should not see big differences leaving at high rpms but only see differences in the reaction times.
