Got this from a friend in the Iraq. Boys will be boys! Busting an
American tradition...
----------
The following directive was issued by the commanding officer of our
naval installation, directed at a Marine detachment co-located here.
For those of you who served in the military, this will be particularly
understandable.
Middle East: U.S. Navy Directive 16134
To: All Commands
Subject: Inappropriate T-Shirts
Ref: ComMidEastFor Inst 16134//24 K
1. All commanders promulgate upon receipt.
2. The following T-shirts are no longer to be worn on or off base by
any military or civilian personnel serving in the Middle East:
"Eat Pork or Die". [both English and Arabic versions]
"Shrine Busters". [Various shirts show burning minarets or
bomb/artillery shells impacting on Islamic shrines. Some signs with
unit logos.]
"Napalm, Sticks Like Crazy". [Both English and Arabic
versions]
"Goat - it isn't just for breakfast any more". [Both English
and Arabic versions]
"The road to Paradise begins with me." [Mostly Arabic versions
but some in English. Some show sniper scope cross-hairs]
"Guns don't kill people. I kill people". [Both Arabic and
English> versions]
"Pork - The other white meat". [Arabic version]
3. The above tee shirts will be removed from base exchanges upon
receipt of this directive.
4. The following signs are to be removed upon receipt of this message:
"Islamic Religious Services Will Be Held at the Firing Range at 0800 hours daily."
"Do we really need 'smart bombs' to drop on these dumb bastards?"
5. All commands are instructed to implement sensitivity training upon
receipt.

1993 when I was in Drill Instructor school, I was leading the cadence during a run, and my chant went like this "blood makes the grass grow, kill, kill, kill, Marines make the blood flow, kill, kill, kill" I was seriously reprimanded for that one to the tune of 50/4 count push-up's.
Loved every one of them.

Who was the President in June 1991? That will answer your question.

It's directives like that which show the enemy that we are too freakin sensitive. Another reason why it will be difficult to win this thing.

I always said that the young Marines who were coming into the fleet in the mid 90's had a different attitude. Alot of people poo-pooed what I was saying. I think you just confirmed my belief that the training had been softened. I know it's the perpetual "old Corps/new Corps" argument, but damn!

The leadership during the mid 90's was severely hampered by some of those sitting up at the White House, and the Pentagon then. Remember that is when all the hazing was going on then also. The guy's down at Air Delivery, and the 8th and I stuff that was happening.
Definitely a few dark days for the Marine Corps then.

Yeah I got some footage of my wife's meritorious promotion to corporal that 60 minutes would love to have! I didn't get my chevrons pinned on that severly! I would never let 60 minutes or any other media have it though. I wouldn't want any more painty-waist liberals crying about hazing. Hell my wife would tell you herself that she's proud of it! She's tough, I gotta admit that!

I have always been anti-establishment, not to the point of dis-respect or treason, long way from that, but I always did thing's a little different.
When I was a drill instructor, my philosophy was put it on the mat for 11 week's, and only back it down when it started making funny noises. I pushed my platoons to the edge but never over it. I still had to answer to mothers of america why their son came home and beat up the whole neighborhood. :-D

Don't mean to pick at scabs Gunny, but what is your view on the crucible? I did not get to experience it, so my opinion of it is outside looking in.

Thank you x 3 for asking this question.
My ideal of the Crucible. It stinks, period. it teaches hesitation, it teaches question orders when lives are on the line. it is not an action training scenario, it is a reaction. It doesn't teach initiative.
I was part of the committe when this ideal first came up, as I was training my last platoon, and they said "Senior, what do you think of this?" My response "why are we trying to make the wheel rounder?" Nothing was wrong with Marines in the 1800's, wasn't anything wrong with them in the mid 1990's. Gen Krulak has his legacy now, he changed boot camp for Marines. We have a SgtMajor who say's "ooh-rah is an improper greeting for Marines" that is his legacy. He will always be remembered for that 50 years from now.

I completely agree! I was kind of shocked to see the discovery series on Recruit training and watched the DI's talking to them like drinking buddies. Mentor my ass! I was not a Marine until they said "Platoon 2077, Dismissed! The Marine Corps got my mind right. I met one of my DI's out in the fleet about three years after graduation, and the first words out of my mouth were good afternoon sir! I hated that man when I was on the quarterdeck, but would have been proud to follow him anywhere. Semper Fi and OORAH Gunny!
On a side note, he even had us on our faces in our Charlies on graduation morning! Good training

That reminds me of something! We were in the midst of the batallion commander's inspection and one of the recruits was asked who shined his boots, and he replied "the boot fairy, sir. The inspector asked who the boot fairy was and the recruit replied, private so and so. We paid for that for a while!

Well now....let's get all those mean t-shirts out of the military. We certainly don't want to offend some religious zealots who want to kill us no matter what our troops are wearing.
Buncha' god-damned pansies. Patton would turn over in his grave if he heard this horseshit.
