View Full Version : where to shift the glide?

example:

if a 557 cid motor makes peak torque at 5800 rpm with peak power occuring at 7300 rpm on a 7600 chip.

the camshaft starts at 5600 rpm with max rpm at 7600.

from what i understand is that the converter should be ~1500 rpm less of the optimal shift point.

1. do you shift at peak power with the 2 speed?

2. would the camshaft require more lobe separation vs that of a 3 speed to accomondate one less gear for torque multiplication. (stick cars with 5 gears often have a tighter lobe separation).

thanks in advance! :)

I would like to see this motor shifted above peak hp slightly as im sure the hp numbers won't fall off by much. The stall speed will hopefully be slightly above peak torque at around 6000 rpm. With a glide, regardless when you shift you will likely spend some time on stall before the rpm's start to climb again.
As far as the camshaft, im not sure if its as easy to say that just the lobe separation would be the key for 2 spd VS 3 spd camshaft. Im quite sure that when those events are changed there are many other points of the cams profile that will follow. Thats just what I think but im no cam guru. May be a good question for Jay Allen in the Cam section.

Let me know your thoughts, Hutch

thanks hutch! i guessed the stall would be between 5800-6000 rpm. i just wasn't sure about the shift point.
