Nice rely they have answered ALL of my questions so far with scarry easy. Funny thing is I am wanting a 434 shortblock built also
I'd stay as local as you can especially if your not buying a turnkey motor.
Also even if your only having them do the short block make sure they have your heads and cam to check P/V clearance, pushrod length,etc...
I'd say BES if only picking out of the 3.

Dennis Mitchell has one of the baddest small blocks out there and he's right there in Huntsville. I wouldn't bother going anywhere else for that. If you ever see it at the track, you'd know. 10,000 rpm, twin carbs and under 300ci.

There are a lot of good engine builders mentioned in this thread so far and there are a lot more. One piece of advice -- whomever you choose, stick with them through think and thin, good and bad. Don't be like some guys out there when you loose a race and instantly blame the engine builder and then change to the latest flavor of the week -- all you'll be doing is throwing good money after bad and never gaining a thing.

I recommend Gary Reavis Race Engines, Fayetville, Tn 256-426-3725. Give him a call. He will take care of your engine needs. If you are not sure about who he is just do such GOOGLE search and you will be surprised at what you find. He is and has built motors for many of the Top races in all types of racing ARCA, Drag, NASCAR, etc.

yea what he said. Its a short block man, not that hard to build right. I could understand having a full turnkey engine built thats really radical and bad ass with close piston to valve clearances, crazy valve train etc.. But just a short block? Have a reputable machine shop do the machine work and assemble it yourself, you'll be glad you did.

...I've always wondered....other than giving one the "fancy name", what do these builders really do for one, that couldn't already be done by a seasoned astute self-builder? (I mean, even Richard Maskin started "in his humble garage". Musi I think too)
Personally, I take solace in knowing that every bolt & surface of my motor has touched my fingers at some point.

It would be different if you was looking to buy a turn key turbo setup or some class specific setup. But you wanting a combo that is tried and trued and Dennis knows it pretty much inside and out. PROVEN. And you can be at his shop in a matter of minutes.

Personally, I take solace in knowing that every bolt & surface of my motor has touched my fingers at some point.
I used to always build my own stuff and got to a point were I was having trouble and a bit in over my head. I went to Tony because some friends used him and I had the same attitude about "what could he do that all that different". He was very respectful of doing it yourself and said that if I wanted to he would do the machine work and I could do the assembly. After looking over my pile of junk, he suggested a couple of minor changes that made a big difference.
The biggest thing he did was not to check clearances or degree the cam, it was to add his experience he gained building thousands of engines that did what I wanted to do. He knew the small things that are worth the effort and the one that were not.
To say that no one else could do an excellent job or build a fast motor would not be fair to hordes of really good builders out there but it may just take a little extra luck or a little more time to get the same performance that a guy whos builds two or three of them a week can get much faster.
BES helped me out a ton and I have touched every surface and bolt myself as well (just had some extra help figuring out why I was touching them)
i only know Pro-line. but i can tell you after severals years and several engines that their service is top notch. matt and kerry seem to know all the details of my engine without having to look anything up. i've had many repairs done same day service when an important race was coming up. doug answers all my stupid questions like they are the most important thing he's heard all day and sometimes those days are saturdays and sundays.

Stopped by and talked with Dennis again, again he tried to talk me into going in a completely different direction, but after we talked I convinced him I was satisfied with my combo and just wanted to increase compression when we freshen it up with new rods and pistons etc.. we came to an understanding and Dennis will be doing the work for me. It does make alot of sence to stay local! Thanks everyone!
