I heard of many people saying to do the burn out starting in second gear if the car has a 3 speed trans (th350-th400) rather than 1st. What is the reason for doing this? Has anyone else heard of this or do this? Thanks, kbb468

The reason is, when the trans shifts from low to 2nd in the water it shocks the low roller clutch. That clutch if it gets hurt is the cause for almost all 3 speed starting line explosions.
Most cars have more than enough power to start burnouts in 2nd then to 3rd immediately before the tires hook or just start in 3rd if possible. The reason to finish the burnout in 3rd or get there before the tires hook is that the torque spike load on the sprag if it hooks in 2nd is enough to skid the sprag or even roll it over.

There are many that choose different methods that work fine also but this is what I recommend and it has helped many that have had problems with sprag failure.

Thanks for asking ,Hutch
