Hi Jim,Say I am new here.I am 70 years old and still messing with cars, I latest SBC 400 has a Vortech ( can I say that?) YSI,21 1/2# of boost,Dart 230 heads that now flow 307-237, 7.8 Comp. and I think it has too much cam.Its 248-260 at .5,114 Cl.using 1.6 arms...I made 42 pulls on Musi's dyno and tryed alot of things. It had 1004 hp. at the limit I picked of 7000, It was still pulling, but I stopped at 7000,the Tq. 783 at 6300...Now I street drive this car alot,By the way I tired nitrous 63-61 jetting and recived 1135 hp. at 7000 and 890 at 6400....Would I do better with less cam?.....:D :D :D :D OLDHEAD

What's the lift. Smaller cam would help, maybe-maybe not. My engine liked to reved to 8000-8500 but was a much bigger cam.

Gross lift is .57-.59.....200 dur. is wild at 167-181(Very fast ramps)..Could I ask have you dyno proven any cams near mine then tryed others????????............:D :D :D :D OLDHEADPs; If a milder cam would help I welcome the better gas milage too

We dyno a engine with 260-270 dur and 700 lift 114 c/l. Then cahnged to 240-250 dur and made alittle more steam and was easier on the valve train.
Hope this helps?

Cam changing can be a double edged sword on blown engines. Speaking in general, you could put in less cam and the boost could actually go up due to more resistance. But the power may be less or the same. Air temp could go up which is not good. On the other hand you can go with more cam and the power band goes up, the boost may actually go down but it's making more power.
I guess the question is, what are you after??
Most of the time you can play with cam timing and see what the motor tells you. If it likes the cam advanced a little more, it's telling you the cam could be reduced. If you retard the cam and it likes it, it's wanting more cam.
But,.... due to so many variables in the engine sometimes it's hard to get conclusive direction, so now were all confused.
If you can answer the second paragraph we may be able to point in a direction......hopefully.
Blessings...........Ron Clevenger.

THANK YOU RON AND JIM....I think I would not mind more HP. if I could get it with a milder cam....I would like to stay with a limit of 7000, and I would not mind more gas milage.....Jim do you mean more HP with 20 deg,s less cam...(260 vs. 240)? What kind of HP. are you talking about 1400-1600 ??Possibly at lower rpm???:D :D :D :D OLDHEAD

Well my 360 small block made 1100hp @ 18 lbs boost 25 degrees of timming but we reved it to 8500rpm that was with a LT4 head flowed 300 int 230 ex. That was 6 years ago. So I can't see why you shouldn't be able to make the power you want.

Jim:As I read your answers I am better off with my cam then a wilder one like 260-270 at .050..You said 25 degs.Am I the only one that does not use a retard ...I run 92 Oct, fuel,16# boost and 30degs. 865 hp. an c16 fuel,21 1/2# boost and 32 degs....1004 hp.....:p :p :p :p OLDHEAD
