Ok I have never run a wheel without screws but when I bought the car I am currently racing it didn't have any wheel screws. No tubes, no glue, no beadlocks, nothing. It has Weld Magnum 16x16 wheels with the double rolled rim. It had Goodyear 17x33.5 tires when I bought it and it ran 5.50s 1/8 mile. 2400# tube chassis car. I ran it all last year with zero problems. I have since made the decision to run faster with a bigger motor and a little nitrous. Bought new tires, M/T 16.5x33.5 ET drags. Do I need to install screws or just keep it like it is with nothing? I am going to run a 4.70 index class with this car so it will be considerably faster than before. Also, should I run tubes? Any help is greatly appreciated b/c I am really indecisive about this issue for some reason! Here is a pic of the car if that helps...old pic with previous owners name but oh well.

I would recommend rim screws for sure.
In regards to tubes, it's your choice, but I can say not too many people with that tire are running tubes.
Thanks for asking,

putting new screws in it every time you change tires will keep the wheels from getting stripped out. o yea beadlocks are cool though

b.t.w. is there an easy fix for stripped holes? Or is it time for bead locks(like that'll happen $$$$) Anyone?

I'm trying the setup from these guys:

I just couldn't justify spending the cash on a beadlock setup at this point....besides my car ain't that fast anyway....just getting tired of stripping out these aluminum rims and the last time we put new slicks on I knew it'd be the last time for some of the holes.

I'm hoping to be able to do that for next year. Already spent so much getting the car ready for this year that I just couldn't swing it.

I am slower then most of you (car wise anyway) but here is how I did it.
I drilled the rims to match the OD of the srews so you are not really screwing "into" the rim but the tire.
The rims were Welds so 5 holes were drilled (inside and outside, 10 total) centered on the spokes.
Pumped the tire up to 30 psi, put a dap of right stuff on the screws and drove them in with my cordless.
Seems to be working fine so far.

the copper wire in house wire can be cut into 1/2" lenghts and put into hole before screw. tightens up screw a bit.

With beadlocks would you still recommend using tubes? 3100 lb camaro, stock suspension, 28x10.5 slick, turbocharged.
THanks.

Anyone buying into the "indexing" theory? Also has anyone welded the holes up?

I could buy it if you were only running 4, 6 or 8 Screws per side but we run 16 per side and they aren't indexed and never had any problems. Shit even the ones on our dragster weren't indexed and there's only 8 per side on a 16" wheel.

I've welded (aluminum) them up before, whats your question?
And by the way in regards to running tubes inside drag slicks, I would not do it. They'll not be happy.
Now liners that some ProMod and Funny Cars run is a different issue...not the same.
Blessings........Ron.

If the screw holes are stripped, mark the holes that are and weld them closed, grind them down with a die grinder "carefully" to keep the ground area under the screw and then drill and rescrew!! I also like the copper wire trick mentioned above, thats how alot of the carpenters i work with put nails in concrete, drill a hole, insert small length of wire and hammer the nail in.....good thinking...

Easy fix. yes epoxy the screw or use ultra black to hold the screw in place you don't want it falling out @ 180 mph.DOnt run without it itll throw of the balance of the wheel & look like crap.New screws dont work because the aluminum strips out on the rim not the screw.PROPER FIX ...RUN BEADLOCKS!!
