I *attempt* to stumble across a turkey when time allows in the spring and fall. Iowa's spring season is about a month out and I'm looking to get a new call.

I've got an old box call that I've used in the past and I suppose it works ok, but I want to try something different.

What are your suggestions?

Nothing wrong with the old calls at all, I prefer the old tried & true methods over the new, my suggestion is that you spend some time out there in the woods doing some surveillance and see where they tend to go, of course it could be the tight ass I am that doesn't want to spend money on a new call when the old one brings them in just fine!

Yeah, I hear you, I need to do a little more recon this year.

Problem is, I don't know enough about turkey calling to know if my old box call is good or bad. haha

i've been turkey hunting for years, and you don't have to be a turkey calling champ to call in and lay the smack down on an old tom. box calls are good for loud ,long range callin, but a slate or glass call sound the best to me, but its also good to know how to use a mouth call. some times they will hang up just out of range but still close enough to see you moving. good luck.

not a pro by any means but ,, i have found as someone here said ,, you don't have to be pro at calling.. and don't worry about sounding perfect.. no one turkey sounds the same.. I like the "raspy ol hen" mouth call by primos.. sems to realy peek their curiosity... main thing is to be very very very still.. they can see your eyelids blink at 100 yds... I also am not above shootin one off the roost either.. hahaa

turkeys can be alot like women, you don't know what they will like from one day to the next, so think of it like fishing, you probably got a tackle box full of all different kinds of lures, cause they bite one thing today and somthing different tomorrow. turkeys are the same way, so its best for you to have a variety of different sounding calls , its not so much that one call is good or bad, they can just be pickey sometimes.

or you could take the ol Rem .222 and scope 'em in from about 250yds and not worry about calling.. just hold tight, take a deep breath and squeeze one off!

Well this morning was a kind of a bust... I set up everything was looking great, didn't spook anything getting into my spot.

7:00 rolls around and I haven't heard a single gobble. I can't figure it out, last Sunday I listened from the road (about 400 yards away) and heard 4-5 different toms sounding off. Then I hear a hen really close... Before long I realize there are 2 blinds set up 30-40 yards away from me and it was just another hunter... Well this sucks.

Sat until 8:30, didn't hear anything, had one hen walk by me, that was it. Only thing I can think of is that someone got in there during the week and popped a bird or two during first season, Monday through Thursday of this week. (we're now on second season)

Did some more scouting and have a good spot to go in a different timber in the morning, hopefully the hunting pressure is a little less there.

I went this morning, it was a bust also.
We didn't see anything, hear anything, nothing!
I did find some tracks on the road, all of this after what sounded like a turkey convention days before.

Well, my luck changed this morning! Had 3 Jakes come running to my decoys at about 6:40. With the way the previous days had gone, I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to fill my tag. Picked out the larger of the 3, put him in the sights, and dropped him like a rock at about 35 yards.
