i think im gonna buy a new lens. i talked with some people i know who shoot and they suggested i get a 70-200mm f/2.8 for my camera. i told them id be shooting some drag racing, maybe boats and bike racing as well.

i found a good deal on a sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 non IS though. it should be good for what i want to do. and hopefully will let help me learn the the camera and all its worth a bit better.

who else uses this lens (or the canon or tamron equivalent) for shooting racing? racing of all sorts that is. road or drag, night and day, indoor and outdoor. and how do you like it?

See if there is a camera rental shop and try a Canon one out before and you'll see what we mean. You dont need the IS either. save the money for other equipment.

Wouldnt EVER own a sigma lens, the camera is only as good as the glass youre shooting through.

wow complete opposite from what i was told. the one guy actually shoots at road america with a canon 50d and a canon 70-200 f/2.8 and says if he was buyin again knowing what he doesn now he would get a sigma 70-200.

guess ill read around first before dedicating to this. there is no way im buying a 1300+ lens though for a $400 something body and it being my first DSLR

Your rebel will work perfectly with the canon lense. Pm. Mike the photo guy about rebels, he was telling me a guy he knows shot some pic's with a rebel and a 500 2.8 canon let him try and they look just as good as his. dont sell your rebel short its a good unit. If you want to wait a few months I'll let you try mine at union grove to check it out. Check B&H photo or 47th street photo for a used one, sometimes you can pick up a deal.

but over all a 70-200 f/2.8 should be a good lens to shoot stuff in motion as well as close up stills, and possibly some wide angle stuff?

first off how much are you going to be paying for the sigma?

and for the guy that told you the sigma over the canon, that shoots with a 50D, Just cause you buy good equipment dosent mean it comes with the knowledge of how to use it

this is a big debate that people will always go back and forth on. the sigma is a good lens for the money...but it's not as good as the nikon or canon equivalent. i own 2 nikon 80-200 2.8 silent wave lenses and i purchased both of them used...one for $900 and one for $800. they are relatively hard to find though. i use them 1-2 days a week just about every week of the year...very reliable to get the shot when tracking cars. i had a sigma myself a few years ago...not too much difference in image quality on still subjects but its ability to track was not as good as the nikons i own now.

thats basically what he told me. he said for me that would be a good lens.

I have the same lens that I'm shooting with now. I HATE IT! It turns out part of my problem with my missing some shots is due to this lens. It's SLOOOOW to focus and sometimtes bounces. (hard to explain)
I'm stuck with this pile of shit till I can afford some good glass. No problem with stills, but when it comes to a moving object, forget it. I know not all Sigma lenses are shitty, just this one I know it is!

i used it on my D2H when I had one...I know it was hit and miss...good results most of the time but it missed a lot more than it should have on that body.

There is no such thing as a Canon f/2.8, it's an f/4L.
It's the lens that takes the pic, not the body. I have seen many a 500 on a Rebel. There also is a non IS version of the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, it is very well known as one of the finest zooms ever made.

And my 100-400 in on Ebay. :)

I have Nikon 70-200 2.8. I have had it for 5 years now. And it is still a rock solid lens. I would say that it is the lens that I use the most often, you can use it right off the starting line or further down track. At 70, it is perfect for a panning shot of the far lane, provided that it is a car and not a dragster. No knocks on SIGMA, I have a 120-300 2.8 that I love, but only for certain types of images. This particular SIGMA in my case has held up very nicely.

Aside from the fact that the NIKON 70-200 2.8 lens is a very sharp workhorse, is the VR, Nikons VIBRATION REDUCTION. Sometimes when it is really windy even with a mono pod, it is harder to hold a large lens steady because the wind can really grab the lens, the VR is worth it. Id recommend saving up a little longer and get the glass that is designed to work with your camera.

You don't need IS unless you shoot with aggressive shutter speeds, but I do and it's worth every penny.

Round about price breakdown - 70-200mm L

F4 - $575
F4 IS - $1100
F2.8 - $1100
F2.8 IS - $1700 - what I have and I use it more than any other lens
