I'm a rookie at shooting, and recently bought a new Rebel XTi and got tired of shooting with the 18-55 lens that came with the kit.
I wanted something for Medium to long Range and finally choose:
Canon's EFs 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabalizer
It helps me with keeping the camera steady since I have shakes sometimes.
I wanted to know from some of the pro's here, Is this a decent lens for taking shots from the 60' or the 100' foot mark at the strip?
If not what is this lens mainly used for.
It zooms and focus's quickly, alot quicker than my 70-300 Sigma but the sigma gave me some very soft photo's, and I wanted something a bit sharper.
The second lens I purchased today is a canon 18-200mm L series lens. I was told this was the best all around lens for up close pictures as well as mid range photo's.
Did I get lens's I can use or am I going to end up selling these and getting soemthing else.

Take all that you bought and put them in the bag as backups and use that "L" Glass. it is the best and you will not be disappointed.

I use the 70-200 on the starting line a lot. Usually it is at about 100mm, you can fill the frame no problem with this lens if you are on the line. From the stands at a national event track you need at least 300. I always try to get as high as I can in the stands to get over the Jersey barriers, so that's why I use the 300. For the dragsters I need the 70-200 though, with the 300 you can't get the entire car in the picture.
I hope you did not get taken on the 18-200, it is an EF-S lens, it is not an L lens. All "L" lenses are white, with a red stripe, or black with a red stripe.

Great choice in lenses but, the 18-200 almost encompases the 55-250. I think I would trade in the 55-250 on a 100-400 imo.

Looking for a suggestion on my next lens purchase. I currently have a Canon 28-135 F 3.5-5.6 IS that I got with the camera. I also have a Tamron 17-50 F2.8. I'm looking for a suggestion on a longer lens that won't break the bank. I love shooting drag races at various distances and not overly worried about weight. I know a Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS would be the first lens on anyone's list but looking for options. Thanks

It's really the only choice, but you could get the 2.8 non-IS version and save a bunch of money. IS is not the holy grail that saves shots. Canon's f/2.8 zooms are far and above any other 2.8 lens you can buy. Many say the non IS is even sharper. I can't compare, I have only used the IS version.

X2 on buying the non IS version. I use that lens for overhead shots in hockey and it is tack sharp. I use the 28-300 3.5/5.6 but on the downside that lenses is pricey, but a great choice for the starting line in drag racing......
