Theyre great to use for wildlife and other stuff, dont get a x2 though, I tried the x2 without much sucess. Everybody I know that has them says stick with the 1.4 . thats one of my next purchases.

I have a 1.4 (Canon) and love it. I don't use it much at all for Drag Racing, mostly wildlife and such. And like Kelly said,I wouldn't bother with the 2X.

Thanks for the info. They range in price from $100-$300. Is this a typical you get what ya pay for? Or can I skate by with a cheaper one?
I mainly want to use it for when my wife and daughter go skiing.

I havent seen cheap one's, theyre hard to come by used also, I asked and the guy said they are gone as soon as they get them. I think if you can find one cheap, grab it and give it a shot, you can always sell it if it doesnt work out.

1.4xII, there are two versions of both the 1.4 and 2.0. Get version II, I have both, and use the 1.4 all the time for airshows and air races, don't use it at the strip, my 300 fixed does the job from the stands, with the converter, it's too much. And by Canon not a knockoff. The 1.4xII is between $250-300.

I forgot to add the 2x version II is a great tool, but it must be on a great lens, and you have to have a lot of light. These shots are with the 2x on my 300 f/2.8. Put it on a junk lens, you will get junk.

1.4 works great, though it will slow down the AF a little + your going to loose 1 stop of light

I agree with Tim, I have had success with the 2X on my 500. The shots below were shot with the MKIII a 500 and the 2X. The Hydros were shot off a mono pod and the jet was hand held. This was the Canon 2X extender. Some of the other brands may not have the same quality. I have not tried a Tamaron or any others, but have talked with fellow photogs that have and the results were not very good.
