What are you shooting with? Almost looks like the camera isnt steady enough and the focus doesnt want to center on the subject.

that looks more like a flare from the lens itself. Try adjusting the angle you are shooting at. I'm no expert by the way but I do seem to recall reading something about this elsewhere on the web. Try searching for lens flare on the web

Shooting pictures of the moon is tricky. I have several really clear ones. You are shooting reflected sunlight when taking that shot. Zoom in as close as the lens will allow, set the camera to manual, set the aperture at about f/11 and shoot at 1/640 or faster. You will find the faster shutter will steady up the shot, and brings out the definition of the shadows on the moon. I experimented with this for almost an hour one night to figure it out.
Here is one of them.f/11 1/640 shutter 300mm zoom lens on a Nikon D70s, no tripod, just propped on hood of a car.

It is lens flare. As I stated in my other post, shooting the moon is shooting reflected sunlight.Shooting on automatic settings will cause the flare due to the strong light rays emanating from the reflection. Most of the slower settings and auto settings including the automatic night setting had flare in them as well as zero definition, just looked like I shot a big white light.

i'm thinking that there is no detail visible in the moon because it's overexposed.

put the camera in "m" mode, and try some of the settings that lonnie posted.

thanks alot, jeff About the moon shot, it looks to me like your shooting thru a double pane window or camera movement. At 300mm, it wouldn't take much movment to get a double image.

A wide angle lense and zoom lenses are two diff. animals. A good wide angle lense might be a 17-35mm or 28-70mm. Go to a photo store and ask to see both, try'em in store and decide. As with any lense it's what you can afford and what you want to do with it. There's a variaty of manufactures.

Wide on a crop body isn't fun until you are in the 10-15mm range. I've had the Sigma 10-20 with crop cameras and loved it. It was actually just plain fun to shoot with.

A couple of things here I can't help but wonder.

shutter speed - 1/60 ?????
f/stop - 4.5 ???
iso -------- 1600 ???! ! ! wtf ?????
focal lenth 168 -- this i can understnd cause i kinda understand the concept behind the shot. But , the rest of it ???

So, and I think someone had said this already, i'm thinking camera movment or lense (glass) flare.

On your next moon shot , try this. M = manuel mode
set your shutter speed to 250
f/stop @ 14
iso @ 400
this is a good starting point for this shot.

zoom all the way out to 300, set the whole thing on the roof of a car and prop up the lense with whatever you have ( i've used a pop can, laid down, a pack of smokes and a rolled up towel) not all at once. Frame the shot and SQUEEZE the trigger. Look at the image on your screen,if your not happy, open or close your f/stop, one stop at a time. Read the manual and practice , practice, practice.
