Without having a good editing software, and knowing WTF your doing with it in the first place,, is it worth saving the 'RAW' files. My EOS offers saving shots in .jpg or .jpg+RAW. I have a couple of 8g cards so it's not like I'm crunched for camera capacity, but saving all the raw images is going to eat up a 1T net drive eventually.... and for 'what'?
Shooting RAW has advantages, but certainly takes up extra space. The problem with canon's and shooting RAW+ is that the JPG that it saves in that mode is compressed more than when you just shoot JPG Large.
Since you have 8gb cards, why not shoot RAW and use DPP which comes with the camera to convert them to JPG?

I would save them. I keep telling people spend $20 or $25, I can't remember which. Go to www.birdsasart.com (http://www.birdsasart.com) get the digital basics .pdf file. Get at least Photoshop Elements. That small amount of cash will tell you eveything you need to know about shooting RAW and processing the files.

What can I say,, with this 18-200 lens this thing feels like a cannon ;)
That brings up a good point. A little of the subject, but while I have all this expertise to help........
As a part of a reclamation project were working on, I'm going to hire a helicopter to take me up to get some oblique photo's of the site as a part of the deliverables of our work (survey, quality control of a mine closure) I'll just calc and move around to the same vector as some existing photos on their wall for final, closed, 'after' sort of thing.
All that for....the old photo's on the wall appear to be 'sepia' as in they are not color and not B&W, but shades of brown. My old Sony digital had that as an option and I assume that is/could be, a post-processing deal if I do record the 'raw' file. Correct? They may not want the 'sepia' effect, but if they do.......
Second question, the existing photo's on their wall are pretty large. Larger than a standard 24x36 plan sheet,, probably more like 36x48 (standard engineering drawing size E for a guess). That large isn't something you run to the local Walgreens or Kinko's to be printed. In this electronic age it's easy to send the files 1/2 way across the country and have the prints Fed-X'd back. But,, who, what, where, what to watch out for, suggestions and ideas. I'm sure some of you have dealt with the large prints and ANY help, thoughts or guidance really appreciated.

Do you have any Ritz Camera stores close to you? They can print large stuff

Nothing 'close' 50 miles from Phoenix and 70 miles from Tucson. Looks like Ritz had stores in both cities if these smaller stores can do large format. Thanks

So thats the main reason for RAW over large Jpeg, is just if you want to print big pictures?

raw can save your butt, especially in situations where you got the exposure wrong, it gives you latitude that you can't get with jpeg.
if you are worried about disk space, turn off the motor drive.
