View Full Version : My 8 Year old Daughters first deer

She acted like a champ the whole time with the exception of the nerves kicking in when she put the deer in the scope! I am proud of her she put a beautiful neck shot in him at about 80 yards, dropped him in his tracks. He was a button buck that weighed 85 pounds.
She is only 8 years old and weighs 65 pounds, she used her own .17 caliber rifle to kill him.

I am all about Kids hunting and getting into the woods, but 8 seems a little young to be working a rifle. I think 12 is a better age personally but at least you are giving her personal attention most kids dont get from their parents.

I think as long as the child can properly handle the rifle and subsequent kick safely I really don't see an issue with it. She actually weighs more than my stick-boy 11 year old son who can barely carry a Nerf gun! Although honestly I was expecting a photo of the video game Big Game Hunter or something instead of this!
Definitely quite an accomplishment at 8. Hell, I'm 38 and the only deer I've ever bagged was with my Chevy Tahoe's bumper!!! And we couldn't even eat that one!

IMO shes to young and used a marginal caliber.
Great job, especially with a .17.

Curious... Where did you tell her to aim? I'm betting it was the chest. Was she just fortunate that the deer was killed and not maimed? Would'nt just declining crack be good enough , does she really have to murder someone to make her point? My nephews 8 and he's dangerous with a fishing pole. I can't believe you guys are actually promoting this.

Then why are you here reading what us KILLERS do? Go back to the fishing thread and STFU. Only crooks want people to fish and not use guns. I hope the hell you never get robbed and try to beat the crook with your fishing pole, if so we will be hearing about you in the news.

Boohoo , did the truth get your feelings hurt?
Who says I'm anti anyway? I own several guns. My dad was a cop for 27 years , as many of my freinds are including my best freind.
I believe that hunting is the most ethical way to put meat on the table if you use some common sense. Unfortanatly this was not one of them. The girl is not old enough for R rated movie , buy alcohol or drive.Mom and Dad probaly have to take her to the bus stop still. Infact shes still learning to cooridinate her body and pops hands her a deadly weapon.

I don't give a phuck that your daddy is a cop for 27 years and your friends are a cop...blah..blah...that has nothing to do with 8 years old lady bagged her first deer.
Who are you to Judge Dragwayman's daughter and his parenting capability?
Do you know him or his daughter personally?
I'm against drugs, drinking and smoking at early age but I'm all for learning experiences with Guns as long their parents have common sense and watch out for them.
I got my first BB gun when I was 7 years old and my first .22 rifle when I was 8 or 9 years old. I got my first .30-.30 deer rifle when I was 10 or 11 years old. I guess I'm serial killer, call John Walsh and have him arrest me....

ok guys let's just get back to the topic. don't let some nay sayers ruin the thread. other than the small caliber being iffy in my eyes I'm ecstatic for her. I wish I had the opertunity at that age to kill a deer. if you don't like the thread then stay the fuck out or shut the fuck up. I've been shooting since that age and learned a great respect for guns. once again congrats on the deer. give that girl a pat on the back from me and my family.

Hey if the girl was'nt a foot off target and used a caliber suitable for deer I would'nt have a leg to stand on. Screw you guys , it's a public forum. Why don't you read what the S.Carolina DNR has to say about deer rounds!
State laws and regulations prohibit the hunting of deer with .22 rimfire rifles in Game Zones 1, 2 and 4 (Piedmont and Mountains) and on all WMAs. No regulations apply to Game Zones 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. However, a .22 rimfire rifle is inadequate to harvest deer and can result in wounding or unrecovered deer. RESPECT for the animal hunted should always be a common sense guide for ethical hunters. Use only a weapon that allows the animal to be cleanly harvested. Generally speaking, a .243 or 6mm is the smallest caliber normally recommended for deer. For more information, call SCDNR Law Enforcement at (803) 734-4002.

Good job on the deer and your parenting. I have killed several deer with my center fire 17 rem. And they are all neck shots due to the size of the round. All kills are instant and no ruined meat. The round also will not over penetrate and go through. You guys that think you need to shoot the body, follow blood trails, ect. Get out and do some more shooting so you too are able to place your round as well as this young lady. The neck shot was no accident.

Ok you asshole listen up. My brother and I took her and taught her the proper procedures for shooting, we let her shoot a .22 first and then let her shoot the .17, the .17 is a center fire which makes it legal.
I taught her due to the small caliber she MUST shoot the deer in the neck so it would kill it and not wound it. She had to wait for the perfect shot in order to put a shot in the neck. It was no accident for sure, when we target practice she has put 2 shots through the same hole on many occasions. She is an awesome shot with the gun.
Tell you what I will do, I will put my 8 year old or my 11 year old up against your candyass anyday and I bet she will out shoot you.
I teach my kids right and wrong, they both race Jr Dragsters, hunt, fish, scout for deer, and whatever else they show an interest in. Maybe you should try it! If more parents showed interest in there kids then they wouldnt grow up to be crack heads and lord knows else.
Thanks for all the kind words from everyone, I am really proud of her.

Wow, coming from you who "claim" to have daddy who is a cop for more than 27 years plus you got friends who is in law enforcement area and you still don't know what .17 caliber looks like.......
That sure tells us a lot about your knowledge...
#1.... no here said anything about killing a deer with .22 rim fire rifle.
#2.... .22 rim fire rifle can easily killed anything as long you know where to aim it.

Dragwayman-
No need to explain you parenting to the clowns! Hell us Parents seen and knew what your parenting skills were with your first post.
I took my daughter out last night and she took her deer! She is 32 and still goes out with me and her brother 38! She now hunts like a lady you know…she shoots the deer with a 300 WM gets back in the truck and text messages her friends while her brother and I field dress the deer then comes out for the picture session. :-D
We could have taken her deer days ago but the enjoyment to her was just getting out with her brother and I just to get some quality alone time from the every day stress of life…HER WORDS.
I took her son out two weeks ago black powder hunting with me and I must be a BAD Papa because he is only 4 years old. I took him out on 200 acres of my daughters land on a 4 wheeler and just watched for and seen many deer with an empty 54 caliber flint lock to him we were hunting but to his papa we were hiding from ALL humans because papa was a little embarrassed to be seen hunting with a 4 year old in front of me and his port-a-potty on the back of the 4 wheeler. At dark we loaded the gun and fired it off thus ending that memorable hunt for us both. ;)

I never said anybody was a bad parent , candy-ass or phucker. I said I thought she was to young and used to small of a round. If you guys would read a little further down you would see that the DNR recomonds a minimum of .243/6mm centerfire , so I guess they agree with me. I'm a POS , you guys are all knowing. Feel better?

Each state has deferent rules. Some states only require a set amount of energy at 100 yards for rifle and 50 yards for handgun but most are 45 caliber and up for black powder. Some will say my daughter shot this deer last night with a 300 WM was over kill, but it was a 350 yard shot and she shoots a 50 BMG at 1000 yard matches. You can not please everyone. :-D

congrats to your daugther, thats AWESOME!!
the age here for hunting is 12 BUT there are certain times of year you can bring a 7 yr old out hunting under supervision. i didnt start till i was 12... not sure how i would of done earlier then that. but i have been shotting guns since i was old enough to hold one. same w/ my little girlie - shes got her own 22 and shes 6. theres nothing wrong w/ it as long as you know and teach gun safety and are with them while they shoot expecially at such a young age.
its great to see more girl/women hunters out there. once again, congrats!!

Why don’t you man-up and put you location and contact info in your profile…..we all know you are a sad person that just wants to stir the pot on other people’s intelligent posts. These kind of actions can be traced back to a child’s upbringing.
It is sad that you need this type of attention in your life I guess you should have had more when you were young so I think you are asking the wrong people for an apology.

Nice shooting... my 13-year-old son took his first deer this season too: a 140lb doe, about 35 yards with a 20gauge rifled slug barrel and iron sights. He also shot it in the neck, because, in his words "It was close, and I didn't want to ruin any meat." Dropped it in its tracks.
For Georgia, 140lb doe is a decent sized deer, and bigger than the four I shot this year.
As for leaving the young ones for next year, at least here in Georgia the population is so thick that the young ones are fair game as well. We're allowed to take 10 anterless deer, one buck with spikes or larger, and one with 4-points or more. That's 12 deer for the regular tags, not including any special hunts.
Most are a bit sheepish about admitting to shooting the yearlings or button-heads, but EVERYONE agrees that they eat wonderfully, and when it comes to putting meat in the freezer (versus shooting a buck with a big rack), few will pass up the opportunity to put tender venison on the table.

If she enjoys hunting and is not doing it to please her dad, which your post cetainly indicates is not the case, then more power to the both of you. I am not a hunter now (live just outside of DC all my life) but hunting birds with a pellet gun and fishing where the most enjoyable things I did as a kid) I sure don't see anything wrong with it and I damn sure don't think that she is "too little" to shoot a rifle under supervision ( well as long as its not a Barret 50 cal sniper round  ).
I applaud you for taking the time to teach your kids to enjoy the outdoors, racing and living the American dream, Congradulations to both of you on the excellent shot.
