Ive been playing with the setting on my camera, learning what does what. Being a total doofus behind the camera, Ive been reading on kenrockwell.com about basics and how-to's. He even has articles for specific cameras such as my D90.

Today I played with color adjustments.

waterfall in the coy pond in the back yard

the weather today was grey and overcast, yet the D90 captured this..

http://www.fototime.com/49AC6F95BB60460/standard.jpg

no flash, no editing with any programs.

Next Id like to figure out how to "stop the water" in the picture. I like these shots but I think having the water motionless would be even cooler. Opinions and ideas welcome guys.

Just a slight lighting adjust and then adjusted color curve with a bit more contrast. You definitely have a great shot there. I would not be afraid to enter it in a photo contest.

If you want the water to appear stopped, use a higher shutter speed. Although Tim does mention that most pics of moving water are shot with slower shutter speeds to blur the water

How do you like the Sigma 50-500, how does that lens work at the track? Does it take reasonably clear shots at either end of its focal length?

Not to step on Mikes toes.... but i also have the 50-500. The higher up it gets the shots tend to be a little soft, but then again i didnt have it mounted on anything and that sucker gets heavy after awhile. In good light i didnt notice much difference but overcast it definately made a difference. I am prob gonna get a monopod to use with it. I think that would have avoided softness issues.

Wow you guys take some really nice pictures. Photography is something that has always interested me, but not something I've ever been any good at. Up until a few months ago all I had was a Fuji A210, and my grandfathers old 35 mm which came with 3 lenses. I've tried taking some pics with it, but havent had much luck getting anything very nice yet. A buddy who is a semi-professional photography gave me about a dozen rolls of film he had no use for anymore (he bought some pricey digital camera.) A few months back I bought a Fuji S1000fd. I couldnt afford much more than that, and it already does more stuff than I know what to do with as it is.

Here are a few that I have taken that I kinda like. I'll see if any of my 35mm pics are worth putting on here, but I kinda doubt it.

This was taken at the end of last year when the moon was really big. It was hazy here, but the moon was still really bright so I set the camera up on the tri-pod and went out into the yard and took this and a few others.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/kidvishus/cool%20pics/stuff017.jpg

Nothing real spectacular here, just a pic of a bloom from my christmas cactus this year. The only thing about it is this cactus is approximately 80 yrs old (it was my great-grandmothers.)
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/kidvishus/cool%20pics/xmas006.jpg

And this one I took by turning the flash off and holding the A210 up against the glass in a hotel somewhere in Pennsylvania a couple of yrs back.

Here's a couple I took with my grandfathers old 35mm last spring when we went to the Outer Banks for a mini vacation.

I havent got the hang of using it yet, so these wont be 'show' quality. I cant seem to figure out the right settings/lens/focus combination to make them have sharp edges.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i111/kidvishus/cool%20pics/R001-010.jpg

They consider this a "road" north of town. Needless to say 4 wheel drive is mandatory.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing them. My girlfriend loves horses, and since it was our first trip there, we went on one of those rented excursions to show us the horses. We didnt see very many, but the weather wasn't very good, and it was February so it was rather cold too. We plan on going back every year now. We loved the fact there wasn't anyone there (tourists) and we basically had the whole place to ourselves. It didnt matter to us none of the tourist attractions were open, we're not into that crap anyways.

How do you like the Sigma 50-500, how does that lens work at the track? Does it take reasonably clear shots at either end of its focal length? In a nutshell, It's a lot like Kelly had said ( Not a problem by-the- way Kelly) ( you can step on me any time : ) In the world of lenses,it is a bit soft. It is heavy but, In the sunlight,it's a very nice lense, especially for the money. I have gotten a ton of tack sharp images with that lense and other times I have been disappointed. I first bought it for the focal range (50-500) . You can stand 10' from the starting line and get excellent shots or you can stand 200' downtrack and get killer shots. With the weight of the lense , it can be difficult to hold steady ,also it does not have IS (inner stabalization) Again, for the money,it is one tough lense to beat and, i must admit, I sold it in favor of Canon's 100-400 IS lense. I bought the 50-500 just after it came out and I thought it was time for a change. I do miss the (bigma) 50-500 though.

The first two are ISO 125 (I forgot to put it on 100), 1/1250sec, f/5, +.3 exp. comp, 300 f/2.8 IS with the 1.4xII on it.
The last one is the same lens combo, ISO 400, 1/1600sec, f/5, +.7 exp. comp. 40D for all three.

Lock and Dam 14 is off the first exit when you cross into Iowa on I-80. Take 67 south for a couple of miles. There is a sign for the left turn to the recreation area turn off.

There is a walkway right at the parking lot. It goes toward the lock and dam. Afternoon is best, as the sun is shining back towards the dam and the trees they are sitting in.

Thanks '71 :D My site is nothin' fancy, just a place to park pics :)

I spent Christmas re-charging in Jamaica, my first visit, and I was struck by the islands beautiful scenery. Here's a couple of shots that I thought captured that beauty ;)

i dont use anything cause i dont know how to use it. i have photoshop cs but all i can do is (horribly) but things out and do whatever the regular options are. like blur etc.

id like to apologize for the car pics before hand, they are just examples

i basically want to be able to sharpen a regular pic like this, add the black shadowing around the edges, maybe a black border..

http://amsteam.net/files/2/amsgtr_03.jpg

id also like to learn how to do the lighting so it looks like the light is focused in certain areas while darkening the surrounding area. i think it would take a simple shot like this and make it look a bit better. i took this about a year ago.

I believe you are talking about vignetting, in photoshop CS3 under Filters in the Distort menu you can do it through the lens correction filter. I threw one of your pics into photoshop and did the vignetting & sharpened it up a bit.

Id tell ya the same thing in person. I wasnt trying to "hide" as you make it out to be LOL. Considering that snow doesnt happen that often around here, i can understand not knowing what to do about it. It would have made a lot of peoples commutes easier and safer if they had plowed. Im sure the main roads were much better off, but there are a lot of back roads here. The salt truck drives by anyway, how hard would it be to hang a plow on the front and plow & salt at the same time lol? Oh yea, where are they today? Please dont tell me there still isnt enough snow yet. There are a good 6-8 inches already. If the schools are closed due to the snow then i'd say that warrants the roads needing to be plowed. An inch drops and the kids get out. They dont know how good they got it. But excuse me what do i know im from Jersey where we never got snow hahaha :-D Just saying things could be easier for commuters here if the county made better decisions.

this is what im thinking of. it really enhances the center, or wherever the focal point of the pic is. and i like the effect a lot. plus the border is also a clean touch to almost any pic. i dont know if i have this feature as i only have CS but will check when i get home

Yea i know how it goes, its not their fault. I worked for emergency mgt for a few years. Its always about the allmighty budget. I was thinking it was an Immature Bald Eagle too but I don't really know much about birds.

I live in Yakima, WA and we have "The Greenway" and it runs along I82 and the Yakima river. It was pretty cold but nice to get a change of "Scenery".

Thanks for the complement. I take a lot of portrait type pictures but not a lot of action and scenery pictures so I'm trying to broaden my horizons.

Well,, here we go. Haven't had anything I felt worth copying to ther server to publish,, and still nothing good, but a few interesting shots. I have the good fortune of being involved in an industry that takes me to a variety of places, some quite remote and abandonded.

...starting with part of an abandonded mine in central Az. Just some interesting old junk
http://mhdsurvey.com/SBmine.jpg

Anyone know what this is????
http://mhdsurvey.com/crnsag.jpg
The crested saguaro is consider scared by some of the tribes in southern Az. This one was in a reclamation area of a mine in southern Az. Cool how they managed to preserve the entire suroundings make it a little sancuatury of native desert in the middle of a very large reclamation project.

http://mhdsurvey.com/crnsag2.jpg you would never know that on the other side of that brush there was tripple-7 Cat haultrucks and 992 loaders removing and replacing a couple of million cubic yards of acid tainted earth.

This particular part of the Tohono-Odhom nation get's some interesting visitors. It's dead on the flight path betweem DM AFB in Tucson to the Goldwater bombing range in Vekol Valley. Lot's of Eagles up high, but the A-10's like to play right on the deck. They have contact with the border patrol and help spot groups of illegals walking the desert. What impressed me (even through the poor photos) the 'trinkets' hanging under wing. ;)

http://mhdsurvey.com/A10a.jpg

Don't see em,, how about here ;)

http://mhdsurvey.com/A10b.jpg damn sure not what you'd want to see if you were a Afgani tank commander I bet ;)

A few more,,,
Was working at the airport in Marana near Tucson last week. Tried to get creative but the tarmack wasn't totally level and just screwed up the shots but here is a group of 6 experimental aircraft sitting siolated from ???? not exactly sure why but some cool looking machines. Any ideas why I'm not cetting the rich warm colors?? I gave up playing with the setting and took these in full auto. They came out the best <shrugs>

Probably the best shot of the day was a 'out the window' of the truck in full auto mode of a flock of what appeared to be ducks landing in a field they were harvesting. (pretty small dots inthe center of the pic, but the tall swaying grasses look kind of cool at 50mph <grin>

And finally... just playing with some seting and shooting things around the house for effect

These are from a trip last week to Washington State at the Palouse Falls. The day job brought me out there and I had a half day to kill so I took a small hike to fill my day. It was a really gray day with dead/brownish shurbs so I really cranked up the saturation applied a super velvia look to these to improve what the day looked like.

I tried to fix these the best I could. Look where I outlined in your extif ( camera shooting details) ( in laymens terms)

No. 1 > Stay out of program or auto modes. What happen here basically is that your metering went nuts when you tried to take a shot of something very bright in the sun. The reflection and glare from the planes threw your camera into a tizzy. If you didn't have sunglasses on you prolly squinted a lot. Here's a secret, in this senario, take your sunglasses and put them over your lense, what you see is what you will shoot. But I digress. And never mind I said that. (acctually sunglasses are a polorizer)

No. 2 > Why did you have your camera set at 1/3 over exposed ? .......Overexposed = more light
Underexposed = less light
Had you set it at 2 stops under it may have been good , but, you had it in auto and prolly never looked at the scale (bottom of frame in view finder) and it was telling you that you were over exposed.

Remember this ........ in photography and colors, white and black are at opposite ends of the spectrum. White, you can't get enough light off of it, and black you can't light enough. So, you have to compensate one way or another. White, try to shoot on the shadow side. Black, watch for glare or hot spots in the sun.

Here's something to try, Take a white car and a black one. Put them bumper to bumper in the sun. Stand back with the sun at your back and take the shot, look at the diff. from each. Walk around the same cars (shadow side) and take the shot. You will see the diff.

Now my fingers are sore and it's time for my nap. I think you have enough to chew on. In closing, READ THE MANUAL . Do 1 thing at a time, realizing what it does. Make changes to your settings, 1 at a time. It can be frustrating I know but, BE PATIANT(sp) READ THE MANUAL . I hope this helps and if you have any questions , ask .

That will be 75.00 for this lesson, make checks payable to me ! Just kidding. :p

LOL
seriously.... thanks Try some experimentation around the house or even in your travels. Take your time, see what works and what doesn't. Here's somewhat of a ballpark tip. Set the camera in Av mode ( apature priority) , I should prolly ask what body you are using. Set your f/stop at 8.0 set your iso at 200 (sunlight settings) If its overcast but kinda bright set your iso at 400 and your f/stop at 7.1 this will give you a little more shutter speed in less than desirable conditions. Try to stay with the two (ballpark) settings, study the manual (just in "basic opperation") don't get into the heavy stuff until you get the hang of it. Take some pics and post'em. Your gonna need a credit card and i'm gonna need the number :p :smt044 or the deed to some ocean front property in Arizona will work ok to. Just stay with the basics in the manual and relax, it will come around.

And as always, your welcome. :p

The fish was there so I figured I'd use it :)

Well, it's really Fuji Velvia film but I refer to it as super velvia because it's always been known as a super saturated color film. Great for landscapes but not soo good for people pictures. I just duplicated velvia's look onto these shots (OK, maybe a bit more saturation than velvia would have produced).

I have CS3 but these shots were never opened in photoshop. I use Adobe Lightroom to process my raw files and these came right from Lightroom.

Thanks for the compliments...

There is a program (i found it) called velvia pro, it's a plug-in for CS3 and it cost 24 dollars, this is where I found it > http://www.fredmiranda.com/ check out this site, pretty cool. The program is a color inhanser for digital. I havn't bought it, I will try and get it for free. I have Lightroom also, still learning the program.

Here are a few of my shot for my Weekly Photo Challenge. The theme this week was Orange. For some odd reason I fell in love with it!

Thought I would share and show some color because I know it's pretty ugly around here!

Great set of shots! Love them.

Jamie

Thanks! I don't remember all that was done on that first shot but I rarely use actions so I'm pretty sure I just bumped the contrast and maybe selectively darkened the sky some.

I love the colors of your second shot, under the gun but strangely can't find a good strong area to focus on. Still an awesome capture.
